Aurrera Health Group is a mission-driven national health policy, strategy, and operations consulting firm with deep expertise designing and administering public programs, including Medicaid, Medicare, behavioral health, trauma-informed care, and other safety net programs. Much of our firm’s work is in California, but our clients span state and federal Medicaid agencies, county/local health services departments, health care foundations, consumer advocacy organizations, hospitals, health systems, and trade associations.
Aurrera Health Group is a woman-owned firm guided by our commitment to our mission – advancing access to affordable, comprehensive, equitable, high-quality health coverage and care – and our values. We select our clients, projects, and staff in keeping with that mission. We pride ourselves on our relationship-driven approach to customer service, our ability to adapt to changing landscapes, and our innovative spirit. We value and reward the quality of work we do for clients and support a range of efforts to ensure that employees can enjoy a healthy work-life balance. We are committed to the growth and professional development of all our staff.
A key organizational priority is our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and ensuring that is reflected both in our internal culture and through our client work. Our values guide us in all that we do.
As a Special Projects Assistant, you will provide special projects consulting support and internal project management to the Aurrera Health Executive Leadership Team (ELT). This is a permanent, part-time role (approximately 50% time, with some flexibility to increase or reduce hourly commitment). This role would report to the Aurrera Health Chief Operating Officer. There are specific core hours that need to be covered (e.g., meeting during the workday), but otherwise with some flexibility. This is not an ideal complementary part-time role for a candidate with a current full-time day-job.
This role is open to both internal and external candidates.
Notes for Internal Candidates: Internal candidates would maintain a part-time role in client-facing or internal work. This role was developed to be held at a minimum at the Senior Policy Consultant level but is also open to Deputy Directors. This role may be a promotional opportunity for both Special Projects and client-facing work, contingent on organizational capacity in their existing client-facing team and the candidate’s demonstrated competency for the role on both teams.
As a Special Projects Assistant, your responsibilities will be to:
Demonstrate a commitment to the Aurrera Health mission: improving access to health coverage and the quality of the health care system.
Support dynamic internal projects, which include tracking ELT and Senior Leadership Team (SLT) meeting agendas, action items, and materials development; developing a project management system for Strategic Plan implementation; and supporting other internal projects.
Provide project management support, including developing and advancing work plans as well as coordinating agendas, taking notes, developing meeting summaries, and synthesizing next steps.
By shadowing ELT members, become aware of complex and confidential company policies and operations and support these issues with full fidelity. This will require you to be discreet with highly sensitive information in the course of other work and interactions.
Identify and raise synergies, conflicts, and opportunities across policies and programming.
Communicate effectively with company leadership, in both verbal and written formats.
Research and draft internal written materials, including memos and slide decks.
Support business development activities, including research, writing, and copy editing for proposal development.
Manage tasks among multiple projects and/or multiple responsibilities within a project simultaneously.
Anticipate ELT and SLT needs and address them proactively.
Create a welcoming, positive, supportive workplace.
Use Microsoft 365 Office Apps to develop and share work products and communicate with your colleagues, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
A bachelor’s degree and six years of relevant experience in the following areas: public policy, health policy, public health, behavioral health, social work, government, academic research, or business/government oversight or compliance.
If an individual has a master’s degree, the minimum relevant work experience is four years. See below for details on a master’s degree, which is preferred, but not required.
For internal candidates, complementary work on company projects demonstrating these skills and competencies with excellence may allow for some flexibility with these required qualifications.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Demonstration of systemic thinking and excellent judgment.
Ability to develop high quality work, including attention to detail, critical thinking skills, knowing when and having the confidence to ask for help, and openness to constructive feedback.
Experience conducting policy analysis and research.
Organizational and project management skills and demonstrated experience, including ability to prioritize, manage time effectively, problem solve, and manage workloads and deadlines across internal and client-facing work.
Commitment to providing high quality customer service, including anticipating and addressing internal client needs.
Ability to work independently/proactively but also in collaboration with others.
Experience with, or ability and readiness to, hold confidential information in total discretion.
A master’s degree or PhD in public policy, public health, social work, or a related discipline, including a Juris Doctorate.
Experience working on complex projects with a variety of stakeholders.
Experience supporting organizational leadership.
