Primary Purpose:
Works under general supervision to ensure proper handling of all specimens received at University Hospital Clinical Lab and prepares specimens for laboratory testing. Manages complex functions with the automated track and assists in resolving issues between specimen processing and technical section.

Essential Functions:
Understands appropriate specimen collection, handling, and transport per departmental procedures.
Processes, triages, re-routes, and stores specimens according to established departmental procedures.
Evaluates specimens for acceptability, patient identification and follows the appropriate procedures for specimens that do not meet acceptance criteria.
Prepares, organizes, and reviews specimens for run set up according to departmental procedures. Ensures accurate sample order and patient identification.
Proficient in the use of laboratory computer applications/programs (Accessioning, Checkout, Inquiry, Shipment Tracking, ITD, LIS and other programs as necessary.)
Documents cleaning and maintenance of work area and equipment as required.
Immediately processes specimens as they become available.
Places specimens on the automated track in the appropriate lanes. Delivers to the testing laboratory at the proper temperature when the automated delivery systems are available or not available.
Properly operates the centrifuge.
Aliquots specimens according to procedure using the proper safety equipment.
Where applicable: correctly prepares specimens for delivery between ARUP testing facilities (e.g. CF-to-UHCL or UHCL-to-CF) by creating the appropriate transfer lists and packaging according to specimen temperature.
Knows ARUP and UHSC laboratories and able to determine their locations, hours of operations, and general functions (or able to find such information using departmental information on Nucleus).
Ability to make sound judgement decisions or checks with Supervisor, Lead, or Workflow Coordinator when needed, before making such decisions.
Assists the management team in handling more complex processing needs including specimen searches and processing compromised shipments when needed.
Observes principles of data security and patient confidentiality. Maintains ethical standards in the performance of testing and in interactions with patients, co-workers and other health care professionals.
Adheres to all safety policies and regulations including, but not limited to, proper dress code and using proper protective clothing and other equipment.
Attends laboratory meetings and in-services as required.
Remains informed of all relevant process and procedure changes.
Productive in all areas for which competency has been achieved.
Completes training and deemed competent to perform selected processes as allowed by regulatory guidelines.
Resolves in depth issues with internal and external clients and departments
Answers questions for employees related to policy and procedure. Assist in the development of core employees.
Assists supervisor or designee with activities such as developing training manuals and procedures. Communicate with other departments as requested by the supervisor or in their absence.
Assists supervisor with quality assurance monitoring and documentation as defined.
Trains others in responsibilities.

Physical and Other Requirements:
Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
Communicate: Frequently and effectively communicate with others.
PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies.
ARUP Policies and Procedures: To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance.
Color Vision: Perception of and ability to distinguish colors.
