Backend Development Subject Matter Experts

We started Bloom Institute of Technology because we believe that the “traditional” model of higher education is broken. Every year, people as young as 17 years old take on tens of thousands of dollars in student debt and pray that the education they’re investing in will land them on a job on the other side.
Unfortunately, traditional colleges and universities have no incentive to ensure their graduates get hired – they get paid regardless.
At BloomTech, we believe there is a better way to approach education.

Role Overview:
BloomTech is looking for several Backend Development Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to design real world projects that will allow learners to apply what they have learned. These projects will align with our curriculum and correspond directly to our learning objectives all while mimicking real world problems and solutions. Our ultimate goal is to prepare learners for the job.
The position is a contract position to work as a consultant. The SME must have demonstrated expertise in the subject area as shown by professional and/or teaching experience, publications, etc.
  • Please note that this is a part-time, contract, remote position.

You will cover topics such as:
Problem-solving strategies, command-line basics, IDE basics, Git basics, variables, arithmetic operations, strings, user input, object instantiation, boolean logic, conditionals, loops, arrays
‍Logging, remote debugging, inheritance, polymorphism, hashing, set, maps, design with composition, exception handling, mocking, and statics
HTTP and RESTful services, introduction to DynamoDB, creating exceptions, dependency injection, linked lists, searching, Big O, recursion, data stores, and deploying.
API design, DynamoDB table design, DynamoDB index design, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, integration tests, and scrum
Iterators, DynamoDB delete, DynamoDB query, stacks, queues, intro to computer hardware, intro to operating systems, threads, immutability, final, in-memory caching,
Optionals, streams, DynamoDB scan, JSON serialization, executor services, futures, thread safety, graphs, trees, service design, and intro to relational databases
We need several SMEs to develop these projects to cover the breadth and depth of our curriculum. Interested individuals are encouraged to inquire about working with us on one or several projects.

What You'll Do:

    • Write starter code for projects for learners with additional assets as needed (e.g. a GitHub repo for each code-along starting point and code blocks for each step of the project)
    • Work with the content development team to write a corresponding lesson plan according to the Bloomtech guidelines
    • Write check for understanding questions (quiz questions) for each step of the project to ensure learners are digesting information
    • Design and develop a final sample project for learners to add to their portfolios
    • Record a screencast of your code-along project

What You'll Need

    • 2+ experience in teaching/training is strongly preferred
    • 3+ years of relevant software development experience
    • Expert level understanding of Java programming language: Java Version 11, Gradle, TestNG, AWS DynamoDB
    • Process-oriented with exceptional attention to detail
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
    • Self-starting with the ability to effectively work autonomously with little oversight
    • Extremely comfortable and compelling in public speaking situations
    • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals
