Job Brief

The Materials Science Manager will be responsible for leading a talented and multidisciplinary Materials Science team working on rock analysis and process characterization, feed material preparation, and rock/process/product integration by continuous data collection and understanding. The Material Science manager will be responsible for promoting and managing cross-collaboration with other technical teams in the company and providing timely delivery of high quality data and feed materials to support R&D and Engineering efforts at Brimstone. The ideal candidate is an effective team-player who is enthusiastic about contributing to Brimstone’s mission to decarbonize cement. This position reports to the VP of Material Science & Geology. 

This role is based in Oakland, California and is an on-site position.

Key Focus Areas of the role may include:

  • Be a thoughtful leader to the Material Science team by leading and supporting team members on projects like material analysis and characterization, data analysis, and rock-process-product integration

  • Provide support to the analytical team on method development and improvement, and help to establish priorities by working closely with other technical teams

  • Work on optimization of rock upstream processing

  • Support the execution of product testing and development

  • Collaborate and support other functions of the company to deliver end to end results and independently establish and promote communication with other technical teams

  • Proactively identify future projects to benefit product development, process improvement, and analytical capabilities

  • Provide timely feed materials for the development of Brimstone process and scale-up

  • Collaborate with R&D and Engineering teams on equipment procurement 

  • Actively participate in Brimstone data-based tools generation for process and product improvements

  • Promote data collection and utilization via company specific programs

For this role, we’re looking for:

  • PhD in Science including but not limited to Materials Science, Engineering, Metallurgy, Geology, Chemistry 

  • Strong technical and management skills 

  • Effective time management and the ability to prioritize multiple projects at one time, and help team members with organization and prioritization

  • Lab experience

  • Ability to lift 40 pounds

Additional skills that are preferred but not required:

  • Knowledge of elemental analysis techniques (ICP-OES, XRF, XRD)

  • Mineral processing experience

  • Data science skills 

  • Material characterization 

Compensation, Benefits, and Perks

  • Salary range for this role is $135,000 to 175,000 per year
