Major Duties


Classification: Non-Exempt, Bargaining

Broadband Installers install telecommunications products and services such as broadband, voice, video and related customer products and services. They travel between work locations in Company vehicles, perform their work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, and interact with customers in order to meet the customer’s communications needs. They must be knowledgeable in and abide by all National Electrical Safety Codes and Company Safety Practices.

Responsibilities


Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Reviews, interprets and analyzes work orders in order to complete required work.
  • Installs broadband, voice, video and other customer products and services.
  • Checks and analyzes voice, video and/or data service delivery as necessary.
  • Provide professional technical support and guidance to customers.
  • May climb ladders, and work aloft with hand tools, may enter homes, buildings and crawl spaces to place/install equipment.
  • Installs, rearranges, changes, removes, adjusts, cleans, or replaces wiring and equipment. Also reviews and analyzes home or business to determine tasks to be completed and sequence of tasks.
  • Maintains detailed record of all work activity including names, times, changes and dates of service. Completes all required electronic order records/paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Extends wiring from customer drop inside to customer premise equipment.
  • Installs and configures routers/gateways, optical network terminals and range extenders.
  • Installs inside wire, Ethernet cable and fiber. Splices inside wire, Ethernet cable, and various termination keyholes, wall plates and terminals.
  • Completes install of customer’s service and various test equipment to determine and verify wire/cable/fiber and service performance.
  • May move and/or lift items such as ladders, tools, test equipment, network cables and loads required tools and equipment on Company vehicle.
  • Wears appropriate safety equipment and follows established safety practices and procedures. Attends required safety and training courses.
  • Works in various types of buildings and surroundings, i.e., basements, attics, residences, offices, etc., and has frequent contact with customers.
  • Works both inside and outside and is exposed to all weather conditions.
  • Performs installations alone.
  • May be assigned to work out of town for various lengths of time and may be required to park Company vehicle at their place of residence.
  • May be required to perform additional duties and tasks as required by the Company.

Qualifications

  • Tests – Results obtained in standard tests for this position must meet minimum requirements established by the Company, in accordance with Company policy.
  • Physical Requirements – Ability to perceive differences in wire and cable/fiber colors.
  • Tours – May be required to work day, evening or night shifts and overtime, emergency call-outs, weekends and holidays as required. Hours to be worked are determined by seniority, job requirements and qualifications.
  • Driver’s License and Minimum Age Requirements – Valid state driver’s license and satisfactory driving record is required. May be required to have a Department of Transportation Certificate if driving a Company vehicle over 10,000 pounds gross weight. May require ability to drive vehicle with manual transmission. Medical Department evaluation required. Department of Transportation Physical and Drug Screen may be necessary.
  • Physical Demands – Significant time is spent standing, walking, bending, stooping, crouching, and using ladders and other related equipment. Lifting up to 90 pounds, occasionally above shoulder required. Use of computers and computer-related equipment required. This position also involves fine hand coordination. Must be able to discern hazardous materials and have depth perception to climb ladders. Must be able to discern color coded wires and fiber optics. Must be able to effectively communicate with a customer. Must have the ability to access, input and retrieve information from the computer. Employees cannot exceed the manufacturers' weight limitation for the equipment required to perform the duties and responsibilities of this job. Must be capable of working for prolonged periods in small, enclosed spaces.

Other Information


Company Apparel

Employees are required to participate in the Company Apparel Program and are required to wear Company branded apparel during their shift.

Training

Initial classroom training of approximately 2 to 5 weeks, which may involve travel and/or overnight stay. Additional on-the-job training provided as necessary.
