Position Title: Peer Support Coordinator

Division: Family & Children Services of Silicon Valley

Program/Dept: LGBTQ Programs

Reports to: Director of LGBTQ Programs Classification: Regular, Full Time, Non-Exempt

Salary Range: $32an hour+ & Full Benefits Package

Position Description: The Peer Support Coordinator will provide culturally-competent prevention and support services for the diverse LGBTQ communities of Santa Clara County. As part of the County of Santa Clara Behavioral Health Department’s Cultural Communities Wellness Program (CCWP), this role is intended to help make the public behavioral health system more culturally-competent and consumer- and family-driven for the LGBTQ population in Santa Clara County. This program will seek to reduce disparities in access to services for the LGBTQ Community due to stigma, discrimination, and lack of awareness about mental health, substance abuse, and suicide prevention services.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provides direct client services; mentors peer support workers and volunteers
  • Manages the development of outreach materials
  • Represents LGBTQ Wellness at outreach events throughout Santa Clara County
  • Manages the outreach and workshop calendar and scheduling of peer support workers and volunteers
  • Ensures data is collected and recorded and monitors accuracy and completeness; assists with program reporting. Provides appropriate documentation and paperwork as needed
  • Offers trainings in mental health, suicide awareness and prevention, and SOGIE (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression)
  • Develops, promotes, and facilitates peer support and social groups for LGBTQIA+ adults
  • Develops effective working relationships with agencies and organizations to advocate for LGBTQIA+ consumers and family/caregiver empowerment including self-help and wellness/recovery movements
  • Provides referrals to various county agencies, community mental health organizations, accessing benefits, personal medical services, social and recreational opportunities, special events, conferences, workshops and training
  • Attends additional trainings and meetings as required

 

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:

  • Education and/or Experience: Associate degree plus 2 years’ experience in human services, or a

preferred a bachelor’s degree in social sciences or related field, preferred.

  • Strong desire and commitment to advocate for the mental health and wellness concerns of diverse LGBTQ populations and individuals
  • Bilingual desired (Spanish, Vietnamese, Tagalog or Mandarin).
  • Excellent oral & written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills

  • Public speaking, training and facilitation skills required
  • Lived experience with mental health systems as a consumer, through family members, or other direct experience.
  • Experience with multigenerational lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities required.
  • Event planning and volunteer coordinating skills required
  • Experience with outreach and engagement, community education, or community organizing required.
  • Dependability: A demonstrated ability to work independently with initiative, using good judgment, and available resources.
  • Experience with program development preferred.
  • Staff supervision experience in community-based and/or mental health organizations preferred.

 

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Physical: Occasionally required to push/pull objects up to 50 lbs, and to lift/carry objects up to 25 lbs. frequently required to perform moderately difficult manipulative tasks such as typing, writing, etc. Must be able to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods.
  • Sensory: Frequently required to read documents, written reports, and plans. Must be able to distinguish normal sounds with some background noise, as in answering the phone, interacting with residents and staff, etc. Must be able to speak clearly and understand/be understood using the English language.
  • Cognitive: Frequently required to concentrate on moderate detail with constant interruption. Must be able to attend to a task/function for 20-45 minutes at a time. Frequently required to understand and relate to specific ideas, several at a time. Must be able to remember multiple tasks/assignments given to self and others over a period of several days.
  • Environmental Conditions: Frequent exposure to varied office and mixed (residential/office) environments. Occasional exposure to toxins and poisonous substances, dust, and loud noises.
  • Equipment: Frequently required to use a computer, phone, and fax machine.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be able to meet and receive a criminal records clearance, as required by Title XXII, other licensing regulations, and Caminar practices.
  • This position requires frequent driving. A valid California driver license, reliable personal vehicle, current personal auto insurance as required by law, and an MVR sufficient to obtain and reasonably maintain insurability under agency auto liability policies are all essential job requirements.
  • Must be able to pass post offer, pre-employment medical and drug tests as required under State Community Care Licensing regulations and/or agency policies.
  • A personal cell phone with reliable service and, if applicable, a data plan to use for business purposes.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certification.
