Cell Press, a leading scientific publisher in the life and physical sciences, is offering a six-month internship for early-career communicators, familiar with how research is conducted, who want to drive change and create impact by helping to build a more inclusive and sustainable scientific enterprise. The ideal candidate is someone who cares about details, asks the right questions, and is looking to start their career in communications or science communications.

The program is designed to give interns the full experience of being a science communicator at a major publishing operation. Primarily, interns see how a scientific paper from the laboratory becomes a story in a major media outlet and how these stories are communicated across multiple channels. By the end of the intern’s time at Cell Press, they walk away with a collection of 8+ press release clips, as well as social media experience.
Internship Overview

Primarily, interns see how a scientific paper from the laboratory becomes a story in a major media outlet and how these stories are communicated across multiple channels. By the end of the intern’s time at Cell Press, they walk away with a collection of 8+ press release clips, as well as social media experience.
Tasks include:

Writing press releases about research published in Cell Press journals and acting as the press contact.

Helping to prepare weekly social media posts for Cell Press content.

A capstone project to be determined by the intern’s interests.
Ideal Candidate Skills and Experience
The ideal candidate for the internship will:

Be studying for or have completed a bachelor’s in public relations, Journalism, or a scientific discipline. A demonstrated interest in science is a plus.

Have experience preparing and telling a science/health story (specifically pitching, conducting interviews, and writing pieces of journalism or public relations materials).

Have proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator skills are not required, but helpful.

Have work experience within an office environment.

Be comfortable working alone as well as with a team, know how to juggle many time-sensitive tasks, be able to proactively seek information to complete a project, and be able to maintain a friendly attitude in a high-pressure environment.
NOTE: A cover letter is required for consideration. Due to the competitive nature of the internship, all finalists may be asked to take a short writing test and/or provide the names of two references.
Internship Position and Timing
Location: The Science Communication Intern reports to the Science Communications Officer Kristopher Benke. This is a remote opportunity, and a laptop is provided.
Timing: The internship is 5 days a week, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Start and end dates are flexible, but the internship lasts from June through August.
Compensation: $20/hr - Contractor
No permanent position is available at the end of the internship, although candidates will be considered for available positions/freelancing opportunities should they apply, and performance/circumstances warrant it.
