OverviewThis is a provisional appointment.Brief Job Description (essential Functions Of The Job)The Streets Cabinet Public Works Department and Boston Transportation Departments touch the lives of every resident in a multitude of ways. Helping residents understand the work and the workers of Public Works and BTD allows us to build a stronger relationship with our constituents and opens up new channels for their feedback on our work.Under the direction of the Director of Communications, the Public Information Officer (PIO) ensures critical PublicWorks and Transportation Department information is publicly disseminated through new and traditional media and is increasingly available in multiple languages so that it can be accessed by all constituents. The Public Information Officer will also be the Public Works and/or BTD’s spokesperson as needed.The PIO leads the effort to tell the story of Public Works and Boston Transportation, identifying and implementing an outreach strategy for the Department.ResponsibilitiesDuties include, but not limited to:• Leads PWD and/or BTD’s efforts to ensure that key and publicly requested information is made available. This includes coordinating the PWD and/or BTD’s response to requests from the press and its responses to FOIA requests.• Develops and monitors all PWD and/or BTD media coverage in order to support the Department’s mission and vision.• Presents PWD and/or BTD initiatives to local and national news reporters and media outlets in a proactive and positive manner.• Pursues media placement opportunities and visibility for PWD and/or BTD.• Identifies challenges and emerging issues faced by PWD and/or BTD in the media.• Promotes positive stories regarding the City, PWD, and/or BTD.• Plans effective outreach to various constituencies as needed.• Develops communications goals, plans, and reports.• Implements approved media relations plans and endeavors.• Cultivates an active working relationship with the media, constituents, key audiences, and leadership across the City.• Fosters senior-level media relationships.• Represents PWD and/or BTD in citywide PIO and press conversations.• Performs related work as required.Required to work all emergencies as directed by the Commissioner.Minimum Entrance Qualifications• At least three (3) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in communications, marketing, press, public or media relations, or related field, of which one (1) year must have been in a managerial capacity.• A bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public administration, public policy, or a related field is preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience. Managerial experience may not be substituted.• Prior experience utilizing technology and "new media" techniques to maximize various communication and outreach initiatives is highly preferred.• Demonstrated knowledge of local media outlets.• Strong time management, editing, writing, analytical, oral/written communication, and organizational skills.• Proficiency with Microsoft applications and Google Suite.• Ability to work collaboratively and proactively with various advisory groups and levels of staff in a team environment.• Ability to work independently and to implement community outreach strategies to diverse groups within the City of Boston.Preferred Qualifications• Advanced degree or certification in communications or a similar field; proficiency with web technology; bilingual skills; and experience in crisis communication.• A flexible work schedule of nights, weekends and holidays may be required in support of the position's responsibilities.• Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.Boston Residency RequiredTerms:Union/Salary Plan/Grade: SENA-MM1-9Hours per Week: 35
