Job Description

College Aide, I (Freshman-Sophomore)

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Division of Environmental Health works to prevent and control illness and injury related to environmental and occupational health risks through outreach, education, surveillance, and enforcement. With staff of 1,000, the Division covers a broad range of subject matter, including oversight of environmental investigations, lead poisoning, injury prevention, occupational health, food safety, childcare, radiation control, recreational and drinking water quality, air quality, climate health, vector control, veterinary public health, and pest control.

The Health Academy provides training for members of the public as mandated by the Health Code and for Environmental Health Personnel in the areas of environmental science. Courses offered include the Food Protection Course for Food Service Establishments in classroom in three different languages and on-line in three languages. Other Food Safety Courses include Food Safety for Mobile Vendors and Soup Kitchen Operators. In addition, the Health Academy conducts an Infection Control Course for Tattoo Artists and an Animal Handling Technique for Pet Shop Operators.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

Perform data entry, scanning, shredding of documents.

Create and maintain record keeping of class and exam records.

Batch check/money orders to be submitted to Finance.

Assist with taking student headshots for their certificates.

PREFERRED SKILLS:
Excellent communication skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills.

Qualifications

For Assignment Level I:
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.
For Assignment Level II (Information Technology):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or closely related field, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.
For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology, computer science, management information systems, data processing, or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned, including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.

SPECIAL NOTE
Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.
