POSITION SUMMARY:
The Night Cleaner performs a variety of custodial duties involved in keeping equipment, buildings and grounds in a clean and orderly condition. This is manual work which requires sustained physical effort, some lifting and moving of heavy and/or bulky objects, and working at moderate heights from a ladder. This position requires performing work inside and outside.
Employees in this class attend a basic training course and receive on-the-job training in the efficient performance of custodial duties. Recurring assignments are performed under general supervision; specific instructions are provided for new or unusual assignments from a Cleaner Leadman, Night Foreman, Assistant Building Supervisor or Building Supervisor.
This is a SEIU, Local 400, Grade 8 position
Permanent Cleaner $17.71 - $30.40 per hour
Temporary Cleaner $14.17 per hour

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Performs assigned cleaning routines and upkeep duties as scheduled and directed selects appropriate equipment, materials and supplies and is responsible for their proper use and care in accordance with prescribed methods and practices;
Sweeps, mops, scrubs, oils, waxes, seals and polishes floors using hand and power equipment; vacuums carpeted areas; strips and rewaxes or reseals floors when required; removes gum or other foreign matter;
Cleans and polishes office, classroom and other furniture and equipment; cleans woodwork, windows, doors, mirrors, walls, blackboards, venetian blinds, ceilings, light fixtures, and ventilators;
Supplies lavatories, shower rooms and maintains the facilities in a clean and sanitary condition;
Collects and disposes of trash; unloads and stores or delivers materials, supplies and equipment; moves furniture, files, boxes, etc., to clean assigned areas or as requested;
Replaces burned out lights and makes simple adjustments and repairs; observes and reports hazardous or otherwise defective and irregular conditions; closes windows and turns out lights when not in use to prevent unnecessary waster of electricity and fuel;
Cleans and polices outside areas; participate in snow removal program; mows lawns and performs a variety of other duties in caring for the grounds and landscaping;
Maintains harmonious relationships with other school personnel, students and the public;
May perform laundry work in the operation of washers, extractors and dryers; and
Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Working knowledge of methods, equipment, materials and supplies used in building service work;
Ability to perform work requiring sustained physical effort, and some heavy lifting and climbing;
Ability to read and write, and to understand and follow oral and written instructions; and
Ability to maintain good relationship with others; reliability.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of eighth grade, preferably some building cleaning experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
None required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
No direct supervisory responsibilities.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
While performing duties of this job, the employee must have the ability to perform extensive walking, stooping, pushing, carrying, climbing, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs. independently, and have the ability to exert force required to twist/turn equipment/tools required to perform assigned tasks. The employee is required to maintain sustained physical effort and some exposure to dust, dirt, chemical solutions, solvents, odors, and adverse weather conditions.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job inclusive of but not limited to home visitation, community outreach and multiple school environments.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS :
Employees in this class are considered emergency personnel and therefore are expected to have residential telephone service and personal transportation.
