At Optum, we define clinicogenomics as a data set comprised of both genomic and phenotypic data. Our access to millions of patients and our vision to link the exome sequence to rich claims and electronic health record data from across the health care ecosystem gives us deep insights into mechanisms of disease and treatment response. This uniquely positions us to provide the required scale and consistency necessary to achieve better, faster and less expensive drug development.

Optum's Clinicogenomics team is seeking an ambitious graduate student to join our team for a 10-week summer internship program. The candidate will work with their manager on a project in oncology, leveraging existing literature and completing analyses using Optum’s clinicogenomic datasets: next-generation sequencing data linked to clinical and claims data. The candidate will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to produce real-world evidence.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conduct literature reviews on biomarkers linked to disease risk, progression, and treatment response
  • Understanding prevalence and impact of genomic and other features in specific cancer types or treatment groups
  • Contribute to the characterization of real-world cohorts: derive endpoints,
  • Keep detailed documentation of methods and workflows
  • Present analysis findings to internal stakeholders

Required Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Masters or PhD program in Computational Biology, Data Science, Human Genetics, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Computer Science, or related field
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship, now or in the future, for employment-based work authorization (F-1 students with practical training and candidates requiring H-1Bs , TNs, etc. will not be considered)


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Solid understanding of genomics, biology, and statistics
  • Experience with R and/or Python programming languages
  • Experience with SQL
  • Experience with analyzing large genetic and/or EMR data sets
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively
