About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:
Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.
Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.
We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.
Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.
If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.
Join the power movement as an Electrical Test Engineer
What you'll do:- Provide engineering support for all current HTS test equipment- act as technical expert on these machines, provide technical support for technicians, drive repairs and improvements
- Be required to have general knowledge of the entire systems (hardware, software, electronics) but would not necessarily require deep technical knowledge of any subjects (i.e. you can pull on other technical experts as required)
- Identify opportunities for improvements to quality, reliability, pace, and efficiency of all test operations
- Ensures tests performed collect the data required for the data end-user
- Define and implement systems to ensure test equipment is reliable and maintainable, including determining sparing strategies for critical equipment, implementing error-proofing solutions (poka-yoke), and more
- Support process development and operation for the integration & testing of HTS magnets from initial low-volume R&D to full-scale production
- Support the development of all design reviews, wiring lists, P&IDs, schematics, tooling, data acquisition systems, and operations software
- Review and analyze test data, support anomaly investigation and resolution, and present results to a team of physicists and engineers
- Troubleshoot and resolve integration & test discrepancies with a focus on continuous improvement
- Assist in the establishment and execution of plans for future factory expansion, including capital equipment and floor layouts
What we’re looking for:- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or science field is required
- 5+ years' experience as an engineer operating or maintaining complex electromechanical systems, preferably in a production setting
- 5+ years’ experience testing, troubleshooting, and debugging electronics hardware and test software
- Experience with cryogenic and/or refrigeration equipment design and use for liquid nitrogen and supercritical helium use – vacuum jacketed equipment, cryocoolers, phase separators, cold traps
- Experience with developing and executing test procedures
- Experience taking products from R&D into production, including developing testing techniques to transition from manual to automated processes
- Experience building a data-driven argument, to ensure all decisions are made according to the data
- Experience debugging electrical system through the use of multimeters and/or oscilloscopes
- Excellent troubleshooting/problem-solving skills with great attention to detail
- Strong desire to improve efficiency and throughput of processes
- Effective at communicating technical topics to both technical and non-technical audiences
- High self-motivation and drive to execute quickly
- A can-do attitude and an eagerness to learn
- Ability to think of innovative solutions to challenging problems
- Willingness to challenge how things are typically done in search of better, more efficient methods
- This engineer works Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
Bonus points: - Experience with high field magnet testing, traditional or superconducting
- Experience with designing fluid systems – P&IDs, component selection, ASME design codes
- Experience with high vacuum equipment design and use – roughing pumps, turbopumps, ion gauges, residual gas analyzers
- Experience with high voltage and high current power equipment design and use – power supplies, water cooled cables, insulation
- Familiarity with reading and understanding computer code (Python, C/C++, Java) Familiarity with lean manufacturing methods
Essential Requirements: - Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
- Perform activities such as typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
- Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, and cryogenics
- Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
