Job Description
The Research Communications Specialist will oversee the development and execution of informative, illuminating and compelling communications materials that generate support for, and raise awareness of, research at Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute.
The ideal candidate will have health/science writing experience, the capacity to translate complex content into informative visual pieces, and the ability to identify, interpret and strategically communicate the institution’s research strengths across multiple professional and consumer audiences.
Essential Job Functions:
  • Work closely with the Associate Director to develop and execute tailored internal and external communications strategies that support the strategic goals of the research institute. Scope of work includes digital and print communications strategies and execution, media relations initiatives, social media, web content development, video development, among other communications needs.
  • Researches, writes and edits research content that raises awareness of Manne Research Institute as an industry leader.
  • Through interviews with clinical and research faculty and administrators, identifies key stories, new lab, program and team developments, the latest scientific innovations, and then targets communications to appropriate consumer/patient audiences.
  • Attends strategy meetings, interviews research leaders and takes additional steps to gather information on emerging labs, programs, issues and initiatives related to research.
  • Create infographics to inform research content, including newsletters, presentations, and social media.
  • Support the research institute’s investigators, labs and administrative teams with development and dissemination of internal research resources. Coordinates web site information updates and revisions.
  • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus on innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and services to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
  • Other job functions as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism or English.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years writing and communications experience, preferably in academic medicine or the non-profit healthcare sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, narrate, and contextualize complex clinical and scientific information in a compelling and accurate manner.
  • Has broad understanding of and active interest in healthcare and medicine.
  • Attention to detail and ability to prioritize and execute multiple projects under demanding deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal communications skills (oral and written) and ability to work collaboratively across divisions.
  • Strong focus on flexibility, ability to quickly adapt to unique challenges and respond appropriately.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office suite of programs.
