Position Summary:
The Director of Distribution serves as the primary liaison between the company and the third-party logistics (3PL) provider operating the Hagerstown distribution center. While the 3PL team handles the day-to-day operations, the Distribution Director ensures that the 3PL functions align with the company's standards, goals, and key performance metrics. This role focuses on monitoring 3PL performance, maintaining inventory integrity, and ensuring that all service-level agreements (SLAs) and compliance requirements are met.
Location: On-site in Hagerstown, MD. This position is not eligible for relocation.
Responsibilities:
- 3PL Relationship Management:
- Act as the main point of contact between the company and the 3PL provider to ensure smooth communication and alignment of operational goals.
- Monitor 3PL performance against contractual obligations, including order accuracy, timeliness, inventory control, and safety standards.
- Collaborate with the 3PL management team to address operational challenges and escalate issues when needed.
- Regularly review 3PL key performance indicators (KPIs) and ensure service-level agreements (SLAs) are met or exceeded.
- Establish appropriate cadence of review meetings to include daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly business reviews (QBR) along with key participants.
- Performance Monitoring:
- Ensure the 3PL team meets company standards for warehouse operations including receiving, storage, order fulfillment, and shipping.
- Track and analyze operational performance data, including order accuracy, on-time shipments, inventory discrepancies, and labor efficiency.
- Provide regular feedback to the 3PL management team to drive continuous improvement and meet company objectives.
- Inventory Management:
- Work with the 3PL to ensure accurate inventory management and control, including regular cycle counting and reconciliation processes.
- Coordinate with the 3PL team to ensure timely resolution of inventory discrepancies.
- Ensure the accuracy of inventory records in the company’s systems, aligning them with 3PL reports and databases.
- Compliance & Safety:
- Ensure the 3PL complies with all company policies, safety regulations, and industry standards (e.g., OSHA, hazardous materials handling).
- Participate in regular audits of the distribution center to assess compliance with health, safety, and security protocols.
- Ensure adherence to regulatory requirements, including proper handling and storage of specific product categories (e.g., food, chemicals).
- Process Improvement:
- Collaborate with the 3PL management team to identify and implement process improvements that increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve service levels.
- Work with internal stakeholders (e.g., supply chain, procurement, and transportation teams) to ensure the distribution center’s operations align with broader company initiatives and customer requirements.
- Reporting & Analysis:
- Analyze 3PL performance data and prepare reports for senior management, highlighting successes, challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
- Provide regular updates on key operational metrics such as order accuracy, on-time delivery, and inventory turnover.
- Present recommendations for performance and operational improvements.
Qualifications:
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, Logistics, Business Administration, or related field (preferred).
- Relevant certifications such as APICS, Six Sigma, or LEAN are a plus.
- Experience:
- 5+ years of experience in running a large warehouse with automation – sortation system, Understanding of Manhattan Active WMS supply chain, logistics, or distribution center management, with specific experience working with third-party logistics (3PL) providers.
- Strong understanding of warehouse and inventory management principles.
- Experience monitoring and managing vendor performance is essential.
- Skills:
- Excellent communication and relationship management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with 3PL teams.
- Strong analytical skills to evaluate operational data and make data-driven decisions.
- Proficient in warehouse management systems (WMS), inventory management software, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work cross-functionally and influence without direct authority.
- Solid knowledge of safety, compliance, and regulatory requirements in warehousing and logistics.
Environmental Factors:
- This role is based at the distribution center in Hagerstown, MD – and as such, operates within an office setting at the distribution center, with occasional time spent in the warehouse environment.
- Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to use a computer keyboard and view a monitor for extended periods of time.
- Travel may be required to attend company meetings, conferences, or site visits.
