Lead Transportation Officer (Open and Promotional)

The San Mateo County's Human Services Agency is seeking qualified candidates for the Lead Transportation Officer position assigned to the Children and Family Services (CFS) branch. Children and Family Services deals with matters of child welfare, more commonly known as Child Protective Services, and provides services to vulnerable families, children, and teens with varying degrees of need. Under... general supervision, the Lead Transportation Officer will provide lead direction in assigning, directing and reviewing the work of a small group of transportation officers who provide support to Children and Family Services by transporting vulnerable children and young people to various locations including schools, medical appointments, and other requirements. The Lead Transportation Officer will also be required to perform transportation officer tasks, and will be a co-lead point of contact responsible for Fleet Management tasks. In addition to lead experience, the ideal candidate will have: • Experience working with children and young people that have experienced adverse events or trauma; • Strong customer services skills and a “client first” philosophy; • A creative ability to problem solve complex scheduling matters; • Strong organization, prioritization and multi-tasking skills; • Successful work experience providing assistance to, reviewing and monitoring staff's work to ensure deadlines are met and services are delivered at a high quality level; • Experience in creating or assisting with the creation of policies and procedure; • Successful work experience in orienting staff to and training them to follow County and departmental processes, policies and procedures; • Demonstrated success in working independently, as a team member, and as a leader on a multi-disciplinary team; • A willingness to take initiative, a self-starter, and an innovator; • Big-picture thinking abilities; • A positive professional attitude in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: • Provide lead direction, training and work review to a small group of transportation officers; organize and assign work, set priorities and follow up to ensure coordination and completion of assigned work. • Provide input into selection decisions, performance evaluations and corrective action measures. • Schedule, coordinate, plan, assign, direct, review and monitor daily requests, trips and emergency requests. • Organize and maintain various department files. • Oversee the use and maintenance of Transportation Officer's car pool, gas cards, cell phones, pagers and car seats. • Assist staff in problem solving day to day operations. • Act as Emergency Coordinator and Transportation Officer back up. • Review time cards and vacation requests. • Transport children, youth, and adults to and from court hearings, appointments, parental/child visits, schools, locked institutions, placements, activity programs, public transportation, and related locations. • Deliver documents and clients' personal articles. • Maintain County vehicles, keep vehicles clean, fill vehicles with gas, check that vehicles are in safe and reliable operating condition, and report mechanical problems. • Schedule ongoing trips, daily requests, and emergency requests as needed. • May assist clients with the completion of simple forms. • May assist departments with filing, answering telephones, xeroxing, and other basic office support tasks. • Perform related duties as assigned. Knowledge of: • Safe driving procedures and practices, including traffic laws and regulations, detection of safety hazards in automobiles, and basic car maintenance. • Basic principles of human and child behavior. • First aid/CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) procedures and general health practices. • Policies and procedures of the department. • Basic record keeping principles and practices. • Basic supervisory principles. • Office administrative practices and procedures including filing and operation of standard office equipment. • Policies and procedures of the department. Skill/Ability to: • Deal effectively with children and families of diverse racial, cultural and educational backgrounds. • Analyze and resolve scheduling conflicts and related issues. • Exercise sound judgment and take appropriate action in emergency or problem situations. • Organize and maintain files & records. • Plan and schedule transportation routes. • Understand and follow oral and written instructions. • Establish and maintain effective working relationships. • Perform activities such as lifting and transferring children and car seats in and out of vehicles. • Read and interpret rules, policies and procedures. • Train others in work procedures. • Organize, prioritize and coordinate work activities. Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills is: One year experience planning/scheduling routes and experience working with children/families. Licensure/Certification: • Possession of a Class C California driver license or equivalent. • Certification in first aid and CPR. Open & Promotional. Anyone may apply.
