Medical Translator Coordinator

DescriptionUnder direction, to design, coordinate and direct an organized program of interpretation/translation services and provide such services for patients, clients and staff of VMC. Provide cross cultural awareness training.Candidates with mastery in Spanish, Vietnamese and/or Cantonese are encouraged to apply.Learn more about Santa Clara Health System at:scvmc.org, och.sccgov.org, slrh.sccgov.orgFacebook I facebook.com/SCVMCLinkedIn | linkedin.com/scvmcTypical Tasks• Develops standards and program design for interpretation/translation services;• Designs and implements a program for mono-lingual and bilingual staff which will enable VMC to communicate with non-English speaking patients and families, through verbal, written and/or visual aids;• Develops and maintains a language bank which consists of names and locations of VMC employees who speak a foreign language. These employees will be incorporated in a translator network;• Coordinates development of technical/non-technical material for non-English speaking groups;• Provides multi-lingual resources for all hospital departments;• Responsible for development, maintenance and revision of systems, procedures and logs necessary to disseminate bilingual information to the public and staff, about patients, members of the professional staff, key medical center personnel and medical services and programs;• Interfaces with Nursing, Outpatient Department, Social Services, and other hospital departments;• Coordinates and may provide language interpretation during the patient's course of medical assessment and during non-medical services to patients and/or clients and their families;• Acts as a resource to the hospital's Multi-Cultural Awareness Program and may coordinate functions within the program.• Develops standards for language certification of bilingual employees; and may perform certifications;• Develops and provides cross-cultural training programs;• Prepares the medical translation program budget;• Attends meetings, as directed; and• Performs other related duties and/or special projects as assigned.Employment StandardsSufficient education, training and work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledges and abilities.Experience Note: The knowledge and abilities required would normally be acquired by training and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in a second language, social science, health care administration or a related field and two year's experience, one of which has been in a supervisory capacity, in a medical setting, and demonstrated skills in interpretation and translation of a second language (medical and non-medical terminology). Fluency in a third language is desirable, but not required.Knowledge of:• Interpretation/translation of non-English languages, including intracultural literary levels, principal idioms and slang;• Principles of supervision;• Management concepts;• Legal ramifications of interpretation/translation in a medical setting;• General medical terminology in English and a second language;• Policy and procedure development techniques;• Laws and regulations common to the operations of hospitals in California;• Ethnic customs, culture and religious attitudes particular to non-English speaking ethnic groups;• Basic Medicare and Medi-Cal regulations;• Budget preparation and control;• Techniques of problem solving and decision making.Ability to:• Coordinate and supervise a translation/interpretation program;• Develop and implement policies and procedures;• Speak, read and write a second language fluently;• Make immediate, informed and independent decisions as to referral of patient's needs and problems;• Interact with a wide range of multi-cultural and non-English speaking patients;• Translate detailed medical/legal information of written materials and documents for patient's signature;• Communicate effectively with patients, their families and hospital staff;• Function as liaison between the health care team/physician and patient;• Develop and provide cross-cultural training programs;• Supervise and prepare various non-english language brochures and memorandum relating to hospital policies and procedures, and other health related literature;• Develop and write short and long-term program goals;• Work under emergency or stress situations;• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with all levels of medical, professional, administrative and support personnel.
