Accounting Manager - CPG / Food & Bev

We are expanding our CPG Team and hiring experienced accounting managers and accountants familiar with the numbers and processes behind quickly-growing consumer products and food & beverage companies. Our CPG Team is responsible for delivering value and insights to the teams behind these brands.
Our Accounting Managers work closely with our broader Accounting Team, Finance Directors and CFOs, as well as others at Propeller, to manage client relationships, to oversee the preparation of monthly financials and reporting, and to develop and implement accounting policies, procedures and controls for our clients. This includes leading teams of accountants to provide weekly, monthly and year-end accounting activities. The role offers growth and exposure to a number of different companies at different stages creating different brands and products.
The ideal candidate possesses a solid operational and technical accounting background, strong communication skills, a proven ability to juggle priorities and works proactively to drive results. This person is a self-starter and flexible; has a high level of integrity; is action and goal-oriented; and is comfortable in a fast-paced, team-oriented, collaborative environment. It’s a plus to have worked in a client-services, multi-client or multi-entity environment.
Responsibilities:
Accounting & Reporting
Deliver monthly consolidated financial statements and insights on the numbers
Oversee teams delivering standard weekly and monthly accounting and bookkeeping
Lead month-end close process for a portfolio of clients, working with a team of accountants to complete reconciliations and prepare supporting schedules as needed
Own general accounting processes, including streamlining workflow, reviewing account reconciliations, and ensuring accuracy of deliverables
Document and maintain scalable procedures with strong controls
Develop an understanding and documentation of complex accounting processes with clients, including internal processes that may affect their financials
Train client teams on best practices as needed
Client Services
Deliver high quality client service to the CEOs and Founders within your portfolio of clients
Develop an understanding of client teams and clients’ business models
Partner with Propeller Directors to manage client relationships throughout their lifecycle with Propeller
Act as the primary point of contact for clients’ accounting questions and needs
Management & Collaboration
Mentor and develop a team of Propeller accountants by reviewing their work and ensuring adequate opportunities for training and new experiences
Allocate and delegate work across teams to balance workload and training opportunities
Track and assist in state and local tax filings
Partner with colleagues across the company and within the team to implement and integrate new processes
The Ideal Candidate
At least 6 years of operational accounting experience
An undergraduate degree in Accounting or Finance
Experience preparing financials for consumer products or food & beverage companies selling through distributors, retailers and direct to consumer
Experience with full close-cycle accounting
Experienced in QBO and other related software tools
Strong working knowledge of inventory, inventory management systems (Dear, SOS) and complex inventory reconciliations
Knowledge of Sales Tax compliance and related software tools (Avalara, TaxJar)
Familiarity with CPG-specific KPIs (Gross Margin, Contribution Margin, Product Margins, GM by Channel, Days of Inventory on Hand)
Knowledge of trade spend, in particular working with UNFI, KeHE and Target
Ability to collaborate and manage a team
Knowledge of consulting business model and tools in multi-client environment
A passion for leveraging systems and driving process improvements
Strong working knowledge of Excel
CPA and/or Big-4 experience a plus
Expertise working with venture-backed start-ups a plus
