Job Description

Reporting to the Managing Director, Head of Domestic Public Affairs, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining a comprehensive public affairs program with relevant domestic government officials from jurisdictions across Canada. In doing so, you will increase awareness and understanding for CPP Investments and our investment strategy, while tracking and delivering on clearly defined objectives. You will be responsible for monitoring for political, policy, and legislative developments and proactively identifying and managing issues that may impact the organization.

 

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Help ensure the organization meets its accountability requirements to federal and provincial governments as set out in the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board Act (CPPIB Act).
  • Prepare communication materials to foster a deep understanding of CPP Investments’ performance, enterprise strategy, portfolio management, investment programs, internal controls, and other processes with policymakers in Canada.
  • Develop strategies and help respond in a timely fashion to government inquiries relating to our performance, business operations, investment strategy, and any other matters, when required.
  • Prepare briefing notes and other materials for senior executives when meeting with government officials.
  • Complete political and regulatory risk assessments on major investments, identifying those that may pose a high degree of risk.
  • In collaboration with the Manager, Legislative Affairs, help manage and facilitate the appointments process, including the development of forward-looking strategies to seek improvements where possible.
  • Undertake research and prepare submissions, briefing notes, white papers, and reports as required.
  • Develop multi-faceted government relations strategies.
  • Monitor and prepare briefing materials relating to the Canadian political and public policy landscape, while serving as an early-warning system by anticipating emerging issues that may impact our organization, investment strategy and/or reputation.

 

Qualifications

  • 7-10+ years of experience in public affairs, the financial sector, or a senior research or project management role
  • A degree in political science, communications, business administration, economics, or public policy (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Strong strategic thinking and research skills
  • An effective and polished written communicator
  • A solid grasp of the institutional investor/pension fund landscape and CPP Investments’ place within it
  • Strong grasp of government relations, public policy and finance (investing).
  • Knowledge of parliamentary processes and government operations
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
