Customs Specialist

Position Summary
Customs Specialist plays a crucial role in managing and facilitating international trade activities for our organization. You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with customs regulations, optimizing customs processes, and maintaining strong relationships with customs authorities and stakeholders. Your expertise in customs procedures and regulations, along with preferred experience in FTZ management, will contribute to the efficient movement of goods across borders, minimizing risks, and maximizing cost savings.
Role and Responsibilities
  • Stay up to date with international customs regulations, laws, and trade agreements.
  • Ensure compliance with customs requirements, including documentation, valuation, classification, and country-specific regulations.
  • Conduct internal audits and assessments to identify and address customs compliance issues.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to implement customs compliance strategies and initiatives.
  • Prepare and review customs documentation, such as commercial invoices, packing lists, and shipping instructions.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of customs declarations and associated paperwork.
  • Classify products according to customs tariff codes and provide guidance on tariff classification.
  • Coordinate with freight forwarders, customs brokers, and carriers to ensure seamless customs clearance.
  • Monitor changes in customs regulations, duty rates, and trade agreements to assess their impact on import/export activities.
  • Analyze and interpret customs regulations to determine the most advantageous customs procedures and duty minimization opportunities.
  • Provide guidance on leveraging preferential trade agreements to optimize customs duties and ensure compliance.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with customs authorities, regulatory agencies, and trade organizations.
  • Collaborate with customs officials to resolve issues, handle inquiries, and facilitate customs clearance processes.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders, such as supply chain, procurement, and legal teams, to ensure effective communication and alignment of customs-related activities.
  • Identify potential customs risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
  • Conduct risk assessments to evaluate compliance vulnerabilities and implement corrective measures.
  • Assist in the implementation of customs compliance programs, including internal controls, training, and awareness initiatives.
  • FTZ Management (Preferred):
  • Possess experience in managing Free Trade Zones (FTZ) and their associated customs procedures.
  • Understand FTZ regulations, compliance requirements, and operational processes.
  • Coordinate with relevant authorities and internal teams to ensure adherence to FTZ guidelines.
  • Optimize FTZ operations to maximize cost savings, efficiency, and compliance.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in International Trade, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of international customs regulations, trade compliance, and relevant trade agreements.
  • Experience in customs compliance, customs brokerage, or related roles.
  • FTZ management experience is preferred but not required.
  • Proficiency in customs documentation, tariff classification, and customs clearance processes.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills to assess customs-related risks and propose effective solutions.
  • Familiarity with customs software systems and technology used for customs processes is a plus.
  • Certification or professional training in customs compliance (e.g., Certified Customs Broker) is preferred.
