Job Summary
Responsible for ongoing maintenance and configuration of desktops, laptops, and their ancillary applications and system.
Maintaining all system upgrades including OS, application and security policies & patching. Works in collaboration with infrastructure, network, infosec, and engineering experts to drive consistent and secure user computing services for the enterprise.
Job Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot technology issues both remotely and in person and ask relevant questions to pinpoint the problem; respond to ad hoc and urgent requests as required. Installs and maintains hardware equipment and software licenses and monitors the performance of the company’s desktop infrastructure and provides suggestions to leadership to improve efficiency and cost. Maintains and upgrades equipment as needed.
- Manage anti-virus and malware detection, analysis, and remediation. This includes providing installation, configuration, and support for anti-virus and anti-malware software tools. Manage Data Loss Prevention (DLP) tools for the desktop environment, including installation, configuration, and support for DLP tools. Perform regular operating system and application laptop Patching for Microsoft and MacOS systems and routine updates to end user applications.
- Review open incidents and requests daily and ensure timely update and resolution details are provided to the end user; escalate to leadership when SLAs are at risk of failure due to resolution delays.
- Work with existing teams and vendors to evaluate and implement new technology; test, install, and configure new programs and applications before moved to the production environment. Advises leadership and executives on the best technology solutions for the organization.
- Provide onboarding assistance for all new hires and contractors relevant to their equipment, corporate software & systems, and ensure their first impression of IT is positive. May train new or existing employees on the company’s software and applications.
Scope
- The Desktop Engineer role reports to the Director of Technology Operations, with a dotted line to our Director of Infrastructure, and has responsibility and oversight of our desktop environments and their architecture.
- Provides Tier 2-3 support to over 1000 employees globally during office hours, and on rotation for major incidents after normal business hours.
- Creates Software Images for Endpoint Devices - responsible for creating functional disk images – a file that contains the contents and structure of a hard drive or other data storage device. Troubleshoot flaws causing software to malfunction by using this default image.
- Troubleshoots Software and Hardware Issues - Troubleshoot Tier 2 issues reported by the end user. These issues could be software related, such as identifying malware, or can be related to malfunctioning hardware. This requires an extensive knowledge of popular operating systems and software.
- Develop and Implement a Software Update Schedule - Use patch management and software distribution tools to ensure software updates are implemented network-wide in a timely manner. Update hundreds of computers on the in-house network.
- Ensure Network Security is Up to Date - Responsible for creating an image that contains security updates and applying said image to all hard drives on the network.
- Communicate with Users to Identify Issues and Explain Solutions - Although the role is mostly technical, one of their main duties will be listening to users explain their computer issues. The Desktop Engineer then identifies the problem and communicates the solution in layman’s terms.
- Must have advanced technical knowledge and skill for hardware, operating systems, and common enterprise software such as Office 365, SaaS content management, and access security.
- Provides assessments and analysis on current technologies and makes recommendations to leadership on new tools or technologies to advance the efficiency & functionalities within the org or to reduce overall spend in the budget.
Knowledge, Education, Skills & Abilities
- Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in a technology field such as Computer Science, MIS, Information Technology, or Computer Information Technology.
- Minimum of 4 years supporting both Apple devices and Windows desktop/server operating systems and technologies including Active Directory, DNS, and DHCP and group policies in a similar role.
- Proficiency with Windows printing and scanning operations, including installation and support of network and home office devices.
- Advanced knowledge of device & patch management and software deployment solutions, including MDT, Kaseya, and Jamf. Intermediate or advanced knowledge of PowerShell is required.
- Proficiency and ease with remote support via Zoom, Slack, etc. to assist with incident & request resolution.
- Advanced knowledge of computer hardware systems, chipsets, memory modules, and peripherals.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and advanced proficiency with the English language.
- Ability to multi-task and handle a chaotic or busy environment with calm and a positive demeanor.
- Prior experience working with an incident management ticketing system like ServiceNow, JIRA, or ZenDesk.
- Experienced in making sound business decisions relevant to the scope of this role; Excellent follow through and prior experience managing due dates and deadlines.
- Experience working in an ITIL environment or ITIL certification is highly desired.
- Must be able to travel to our other Maryland sites if needed for escalated support.
- This is a hybrid role where the candidate will spend a portion of their time each week working in our Baltimore office.
