Developed Recreation Intern

This is an exciting multi-discipline position working for a Forest Service district recreation program. The position will include assisting trail crews and staff in all matters concerning trail maintenance and sustainability. Interns will be responsible for recreation operations and planning support. Core program work will include recreation data collection, public information/education program delivery, developed recreation site operations/maintenance, cabin maintenance, trail maintenance, and road maintenance.

Interns will work with permanent and seasonal staff to engage with volunteers on trail management, design, construction, and partnerships to help develop a sustainable trails program. Other duties will include support of field operations in developed recreation, cabins, backcountry patrol, and resource programs. Interns will need to bring a positive attitude, willingness to work in inclement (wet) weather, long days and spiked out in remote field camps.

Compensation Amounts:

  • $1,500 – one time RT travel allowance
  • $300 – weekly living allowance
  • $310 – monthly housing allowance to pay for USFS bunkhouse costs (3 months; you are expected to use this to budget for your USFS housing which you will pay the USFS for)
  • $500 – duty-related reimbursable expenses (boots, gear)
  • AmeriCorps eligible ($1,718.25 Education Award)
  • All allowances subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes

It is SCA's policy that all AmeriCorps-required background checks must return cleared prior to the position's start; this includes being fingerprinted for the FBI check. Otherwise, the AmeriCorps award will be removed or the position's start date will be delayed due to non-compliance.

Training Provided: Interns will be trained in a wide variety of trail maintenance and conservation techniques. Interns will also learn Leave No Trace principles and how to live in a backcountry setting.

C.Partner will pay the SCA to provide housing allowance for the member.

Bunkhouse housing will be provided. Bunkhouse facility is on the district office compound, right next door to where interns will report to work each day. Expect to have a roommate. Bunkhouse accommodations include kitchen facilities with all the pots/pans/utensils provided; shared living room space with TV; multiple bathrooms/showers; bedding such as linens/pillow/comforter can be provided as well.

Bunkhouse is located within walking distance to stores, restaurants, town center, and Alyeska Ski Resort. A brand new bike path runs right behind the bunkhouse and connects all of town (a number of bikes are available for bunkhouse residents to use). Additionally hiking trails, including a portion of the Iditarod National Historic Trail, are within walking distance of the bunkhouse.
