As a member of The New Yorker’s editorial infrastructure team, the developer helps build and maintain the tools that story editors, fact-checkers, copy editors, art editors, and other editorial teams use every day to produce The New Yorker’s acclaimed and wide-ranging journalism. This role reports to the director of editorial infrastructure and is a key contributor to a tight-knit team, but will also collaborate with stakeholders across The New Yorker’s editorial and consumer-facing product and technology teams to develop efficient, flexible products, tools, and workflows. The ideal candidate is a skilled engineer and a creative problem-solver with a deep interest in journalism. This is a Guild position.
Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain internal applications to support the editorial work and operations of The New Yorker, including systems for programming and managing assignments, facilitating production, and maintaining and utilizing archives.
  • Build and maintain workflow scripts and software used by The New Yorker’s editorial teams to produce content for the print magazine, Web site, and other platforms.
  • Consult on the design and assist in the implementation of workflows and data structures used across the publication.
  • Contribute to sprint planning, participate in code reviews, and communicate with team members to execute projects successfully and on time.
  • Manage codebases and coding standards for editorial infrastructure tools.
  • Collaborate with other editorial teams on new projects and the continued improvement of internal systems.
  • Consult with other development teams at Condé Nast to build new products in an iterative development environment.
  • Write clear and concise documentation, including both standalone documents and annotated application code.
  • Research and advise on technical decisions for new projects and products.
  • Liaise with engineering teams within Condé Nast to support the maintenance of our tools and content.
  • Learn new skills, languages, and technologies, as needed.
  • Additional duties as required, or as assigned by the manager.
Basic Qualifications:
  • A minimum of three years of professional experience in a software development role (preferably full-stack) using modern JavaScript frameworks.
  • Experience in front-end Web fundamentals (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Web performance, accessibility).
  • Experience with front-end frameworks (such as React, Angular, Vue, or Svelte).
  • Familiarity with one or more back-end languages and frameworks (Node.js, Go, Ruby/Rails, Python).
  • Familiarity with one or more database languages and technologies (SQL, MongoDB / NoSQL).
  • Experience working with APIs on either the front end or back end (either REST-style or GraphQL-style).
  • Knowledge of current front-end Web development best practices and intention to keep up with evolving conventions.
  • Great verbal and written communication skills; thrives within a close-knit, dynamic team.
  • An interest in the editorial values, style, and standards of The New Yorker. Previous experience working in a journalistic context is a plus.
  • Willingness to work some early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays, as individual projects may require.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A background in journalism or media.
  • Experience with Agile methodology and/or project management tools (e.g., Linear, Jira, Asana, Basecamp).
  • Experience with testing frameworks like (e.g., Jest, Mocha).
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud.
  • Familiarity with JavaScript building and bundling tooling and frameworks (e.g., Webpack, Gulp, Browersify).
The expected base salary range for this position is from $95,000 - $140,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
