Department Statement:
The Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (MIST) Program students immerse themselves in the history, culture, and politics of the Middle East, North Africa, Asia, and the rest of the Islamic world.
Through historical and cultural analysis, students explore the development of Islamic societies in multiple regions.
Accountabilities:
The Student Worker plays an essential role in implementing the digital communications of MIST and supports an online approach that aims to build the department's identity, engage a variety of audiences, and broadcast news to the Colgate community. This position is responsible for content creation and curation, post scheduling, and regular monitoring of digital communications platform performance. The ideal candidate for this position has an understanding of how to use digital communications platforms in a professional environment and an enthusiasm for using social media to educate and inform. The Student Worker will be highly supervised and engaged in departmental activities, with the expectation of documenting and communicating news and other information that showcases the accomplishments, interests, and values of the Department of Religion.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
- Day-to-day administration of digital communications platforms (e.g. department website, Twitter, Instagram)
- Assist with content planning activities, including an editorial calendar and post scheduling
- Create and post timely and compelling text and visual content
- Monitor news and activities within the department and the Colgate community
- Routinely engage with the Colgate community online
- Ensure message continuity and integrity across all digital communications platforms
- Engage in learning opportunities to enhance skills
- Perform other communications-related tasks as assigned
Professional Experience/Qualifications
- Commitment to the departments mission and alignment with its values
- Experience using digital communications platforms in a professional environment
- Knowledge of a variety of religious traditions
- Exceptional written communications skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Basic photography, graphic design, and photo enhancement skills (e.g., Adobe Photoshop)
- Takes initiative, is self-motivated, and has a desire to learn and improve skills
- Shows discretion and ability to effectively communicate sensitive topics
- Willingness to embrace critical feedback with a positive attitude
