Vitro has a Director, Government Affairs opening in Harmar (near Pittsburgh, PA) at the Vitro Glass Technology Center.
The Director, Government Affairs will oversee all facets of Vitro’s Government Affairs, ensuring that Vitro products are well positioned with codes, regulations, and voluntary government programs. Manages interpersonal relations and communications concerning government affairs between Vitro associates, appropriate government representatives and government affairs consultants and stakeholders to further Vitro’s position in the North American construction market. Works directly with the Sustainability Director and Vitro Sustainability team to further Vitro sustainability efforts and develop input to regulations as well as provide guidance for internal direction. Works directly with the Director, Technical Services to provide guidance for product development to meet codes and regulations and providing technical support and direction to strategic customers including product application and fabrication guidelines, enhancing Vitro’s reputation as a leader in providing value-added glazing solutions. Should Vitro choose to establish a Political Action Committee, (PAC) for deeper political involvement, this position would be responsible for developing the PAC plan and implementing and managing the PAC.
Responsibilities:
The Director, Government Affairs directs these functions for the entire Architectural Business and works externally with suppliers, customers, regulators and stakeholder organizations as well as internally, with sales, marketing, innovation group, operations, engineering, corporate continuous improvement and EHS.
  • Create measurable value by Advancing regulation, legislation or national government level programs such as Energy Star for Windows Doors & Skylights that creates new or expanded opportunities for Vitro’s products, creates or maintains a competitive advantage for the company, or reduces costs.
  • Work towards preventing regulation or legislation that increases Vitro’s costs or makes the company’s products less competitive or obsolete in the market.
  • Using technical knowledge of Vitro’s customer base and the fenestration supply chain to provide input to codes and regulations to advance the interests of the entire fenestration industry.
  • Identify and direct internal and external support in specific specialized areas including:
  • Governmental business development, (development consultants) Governmental Sales, Direct business to secure government contracts, (ARG)
  • National codes and standards development/modification that impact Vitro products, (RALaw)
  • Assists with the development and implementation of the Vitro Sustainability Roadmap in coordination with the Sustainability Team and policy.
  • Lead the development of policy to capitalize on and/or mitigate risks of increasing sustainability regulations such as the Buy Clean California Act, the Buy Clean Colorado Act, NYC LL97, Boston BEDRO, etc.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of technical documentation, audit processes and customer process training to provide value to participants of Vitro Certified™ Network Programs, both commercial and residential.
  • Audits may be performed among the NA borders and supporting international customers.
  • Able to demonstrate glass performance to meet customer expectations for energy efficiency and aesthetics in the design of new buildings and renovation of existing buildings.
  • Able to support proper customer fabrication and application of Vitro glass in buildings.
  • Assists with government affairs support and recommendations, in the development of new products and services.
  • Represent Vitro’s government affairs interests and provide professional direction to appropriate trade associations and external stakeholder organizations of the value add of Vitro products to advance Vitro’s interests.
  • Provide appropriate communications to Vitro leadership of progress, opportunities and roadblocks.

The Sustainability, Government Affairs & Technical Services Department is responsible for over 300 days/year of on-site participation at customer facilities, job-sites, legislator meetings and industry events. The remainder of time is work or home office based. Associates located near Pittsburgh are expected to work 2 days/week at the Vitro Glass Technical Center when not travelling.
Routine operation of glass measurement equipment such as but not limited to: Portable spectrophotometer; portable digital microscopy; glass product identification devices, etc. is necessary during job-site visits and occasionally during customer visits.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree with at least 10 years’ experience in government affairs, public affairs, and political communications processes. Understanding of the glass construction industry and direct customer interaction experience is preferred. Technical comprehension and representation experience with customers is preferred. Travel is estimated at 20 to 40 percent.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with experience in creating and
delivering presentations
  • Highly motivated, able to work independently and in a team environment
  • Strong analytical skills are a plus
  • Requires the ability to work under tight deadlines

Ability to efficiently conduct overnight travel and host / attend customer and client dinners after normal hours;
Participate in glass and processing evaluations at customer facilities and at customer’s customer job-sites.
Customer audits may require up to eight hours of standing during fabrication process evaluations.
Lifting of handheld instrumentation and sample glass may be occasionally required.
