The North Dakota State University Foundation seeks mission-driven individuals interested in joining a growing team dedicated to connecting people, developing partnerships, teamwork, accountability, transparency, stewardship, communication, and service. The Foundation invites candidates for a Director of Creative Services- a full-time, exempt position.

Position Summary:

The Director of Creative Services oversees the communications, marketing, and creative needs of the Foundation. This position produces and manages external and internal content for a range of projects and stakeholders. Projects including but are not limited to gift proposals and concept papers, case statements, personalized stewardship, endowment reports, press releases/announcements, direct and digital marketing, digital communication, print and digital issues of NDSU Foundation Magazine, scripting, marketing, and creative needs for organization events. This is a highly collaborative, service-oriented position that requires strong relationship management with all stakeholders, and an understanding of the Foundation’s overall communication, creative services, marketing strategy, and stakeholder needs.
Primary Responsibilities:

Unit and Program Management
  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight of the Foundation’s brand including website, social media, print, digital communication, marketing, annual giving appeal letters, Giving Day, Crowdfunding, etc.
  • Collaborate with all units of the Foundation to meet creative service and marketing needs
  • Evaluate unit goals and objectives
  • Collaborate with all units to execute fundraising strategies
  • Serve as a staff liaison to the Foundation Trustee’s Outreach Committee
  • Delegate projects as necessary to reach Foundation creative service and marketing needs
Leadership and Personnel Management
  • Ensure successful performance by developing a competent, well-educated staff through ongoing communication, training, and coaching
  • Coordinate with internal and external constituencies to determine specific goals and objectives
  • Foster a positive work environment, characterized by open communication, collegiality, support, accountability and motivation to optimize staff performance, satisfaction/morale and retention
  • Research and educate staff on best practices, evaluate new trends, develop and pilot new programs, and establish metrics for tracking success
  • Develop and/or assist in managing of the annual budget for communication, marketing, and office stationery
  • Orient, train, mentor, coach, and develop team members, encouraging an appropriate level of independence supporting professional growth
  • Communicate, support and apply Foundation policies and procedures in collaboration with Human Resources and other management team members
Communications, Creative Services Strategies, Marketing, and Project Management
  • Deliver consistent, powerful, and compelling messages that incorporate advancement priorities, while sustaining and elevating the University’s and Foundation’s messages and branding guidelines
    • Collaborate with Foundation and University staff to create materials that inspire philanthropic support for the University
    • Work with campus partners to find opportunities to leverage Foundation content across campus
  • Develop creative content to elevate the Foundation’s mission
    • Create strategies and messaging for the Foundation across multiple platforms including print and digital
    • Work with campus partners to identify students, faculty, and programs impacted by philanthropy
  • Act as editor-in-chief and writer for the NDSU Foundation Magazine, both digital and print
    • Determine layout, design, and content for the versions of the magazine
    • Write stories showcasing philanthropy in action at NDSU and value of the University to the region, state, world
    • Assign stories for the publications
    • Edit, proofread, and provide direction for edits on all stories, photography, and layout
    • Work closely with writers, contributors, photographers, and designers to bring each vision to fruition
  • Work collaboratively with development staff in outlining and preparing written proposals for prospective donors
  • Work collaboratively with events staff in preparing scripts and talking points for program participants
  • Manage projects
    • Provide quality control over all editorial, marketing, and creative projects
    • Interface directly with internal clients providing transparency in the prioritization of projects and deliverables in a way that ensures excellent customer service and collaboration
  • Create and manage project plans to include marketing initiatives for fundraising, stewardship, events, annual giving appeals, and University email creative needs
  • Other Duties as Assigned
Essential Functions:
1. Set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, and track details/data/information/activities.
a. Efficiently operate a personal computer and associated software (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
b. Maintain files accurately, in paper and in software programs
c. Maintain records and prepare reports
d. Handle multiple tasks simultaneously
e. Plan, prioritize and meet deadlines
2. Establish and maintain positive working relationships with others both internally and externally to achieve the goals of the organization.
a. Interact in an effective and appropriate manner with diverse populations, internal staff, University community and the public
3. Work cooperatively and effectively with others to identify resolve problems and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness
a. Maintain confidentiality of records and information
b. Display excellent judgment and decision making
c. Follow through on projects with little supervision
4. Speak, listen, and write in a clear, thorough, and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques
5. Prompt and reliable attendance
6. Demonstrate support of the Foundation’s mission and beliefs
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing, journalism, communication, or related field
  • 4 years’ experience in writing/editing field, including experience with interviewing and persuasive writing
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team
  • Advanced proofreading and editing skills with knowledge of AP Style
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to high-quality outcomes
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced, multi-task environment
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and responsibility regarding information related to the Foundation, its subsidiaries and University business and confidential prospect information
  • Proficiency with technology (i.e. with emphasis and experience with Microsoft Office Suite products)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in public relations, marketing, journalism, communication or related field
  • 7 years of experience in writing/editing field, including experience with interviewing
  • Experience executing successful creative strategies for a company or organization
  • Experience in a higher education or nonprofit setting
  • Fundraising and marketing knowledge and/or experience
  • Experience leading collaboration and delivering excellent customer service to a diverse population
Physical Demands:
Constantly operates a computer/smartphone/tablet. Regularly required to maintain a stationary position, move about the office, determine what others have said or written, critical thinking and converse with others and exchange accurate information. Regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach, and move about the office and within the community. May also include occasional bending, stooping, squatting, and/or pushing and pulling or moving objects. Occasionally required to move, raise, reach and/or retrieve binders, books, boxes, and files up to ten (10) pounds.
