Director of Firmware Engineering

We're excited to be adding a Director of Firmware Engineering to our growing team! This is an engaging and challenging opportunity that plays an intricate role in shaping the development of our upcoming August and Yale products. We are looking for a results-oriented and passionate engineering leader who wants to live on the edge of technologies that bring software and hardware together, within the connected home.

This position will report directly to the Vice President of Engineering. We are seeking a Director of Firmware Engineering to support our efforts in building world-class mobile solutions for our direct-to-consumer products, as well as our business partners. You will get to work on adjusting the firmware engineering team to help more efficiently deliver new projects. The team's goal is to ship state of the art connected devices to secure and allow access to the things people care about.

This is a remote position.

WHAT YOUR DAY LOOKS LIKE

  • Work cross-functionally to bring a product from conception to production with an understanding of the end-to-end ecosystem required to provide value to the end user
  • Architect and lead a team of firmware developers focused on delivering connected devices
  • Keep up with emerging technological developments associated with connected devices (e.g., Matter, Thread, BLE, etc.)
  • Drive the engineering team toward higher technical standards, reliability, and overall excellence
  • Work with the development team and manufacturers on troubleshooting hardware-firmware issues including those around integration, tools, processes, and testing
  • Conduct 1:1 conversations, team building, coaching, helping to grow the team, and asking questions that will help the team work through technical challenges

WHAT BRINGS SUCCESS TO THIS ROLE

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Familiarity with Agile processes and practices
  • Willingness/eagerness to occasionally engage in projects beyond the specific scope of the role

REQUIREMENTS

  • 5+ years of team leadership experience in firmware/software development leading a team of 5 or more
  • 3+ years' experience developing and delivering firmware for consumer electronics - in large volumes a bonus
  • 10+ years professional experience on embedded processors
  • Good understanding of multi-threaded embedded system concepts including tasks, priorities, deadlocks, etc
  • Middleware development experience on embedded systems including Bluetooth software stacks and network security protocols such as SSL/TLS
  • Experience with a wide variety of embedded peripherals (Accelerometer, Gyro, SPI flash, eMMC, temperature sensors, etc.)
  • Experience with tools such as Git, Makefile, build systems, and solutions for continuous integration
  • Ability to read schematics and some level of soldering experience

COMPENSATION PACKAGE

We strive to offer a competitive compensation package that aligns with market rates for companies similar in size and industry. Salary is just one component of our total rewards package, including benefits, bonuses, professional development, and additional perks.

Actual salaries offered will vary and may be below or above the ranges listed based on various factors including but not limited to the scope of the role, location, experience, skill set, and educational background. We expect most candidates offered positions at Smart Residential US to fall well within the range based on these factors while also having balanced internal equity relative to other Smart Residential US employees.

Salary Range: $160,000 - $210,000
