Director, Operational Excellence

Who We Are

BioMarin’s Technical Operations group is responsible for creating our drugs for use in clinical trials and for scaling production of those drugs for the commercial market. These engineers, technicians, scientists and support staff build and maintain BioMarin’s cutting-edge manufacturing processes and sites, provide quality assurance and quality control to ensure we meet regulatory standards, and procure the needed goods and services to support manufacturing and coordinating the worldwide movement of our drugs to patients.


PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

Building on the OE plan that has been developed across Technical Operations, this individual will work with the Quality organization to set it up for future success. The role will report into the Business Process Improvement organization and is a critical facet of transforming the impact of the Quality function..

This is a challenging role that requires a very sound knowledge of OE principles, especially deployment capabilities.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Partner with Quality, both operational and global sub functions, to develop and deploy their future strategy leveraging operational excellence concepts.
  • Support deployment of OE at all levels of the Quality organization, from development of strategy to tactical execution of the plan over time, to eliminate waste and improve processes.
  • Work formally, both through Global Quality Leadership Team and informally with Quality Leaders on a continuous basis to further the growth of OE within the function.

  • Planning/Organization - Excellent planning and prioritization skills with the ability to multitask and adapt. Able to synthesize large amounts of information. Able to deliver results despite shifting environment.
  • Analytical Problem Solving – Ability to identify problems, define problem statement clearly and accurately and apply structured and disciplined methodology to identify data-driven root causes. Innovative and effective in solution development, risk mitigation, and execution.


EDUCATION

  • Science or Engineering background required, ideally with some Business background preferred but not essential.
  • Formal Lean training/qualifications with a proven track record of deployment is essential.
  • Having a background in Quality is preferred but not essential.


EXPERIENCE

  • Must have extensive experience in driving lean and/or six sigma to a high standard.
  • Must have a demonstrated track record in driving performance through self and others by inventively harnessing surrounding (albeit often) constrained resources.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in industry with some in biopharma.
  • Sound knowledge of cGMPs and equivalent industry regulations.


OTHER JOB DETAILS

  • This role will be set to director level.
  • The role will be based in Novato.
  • The working style can be hybrid: working from home / in the office although the colleague will be expected to be on site when required by the business. Expected time in office is minimum 60%.
  • To support the business most effectively, travel may be required up to 15% of the time.

In the U.S., the salary range for this position is $ 164,000 to $ 246,000 per year, which factors in various geographic regions. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A discretionary bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
