Director - Operations

Essential Functions

  • Manage Cross Border operations.
  • Assist in meeting the budget goals for his/her products.
  • Oversee and correct service issues with customers.
  • Manage Domestic Carrier relationships and rate negotiations.
  • Help design, develop, and roll out the Cross Border and Ocean products.
  • Work with and assist in training Mexico sales staff.
  • Support U.S. Sales Staff when required.
  • Ensure carrier performance meets customer expectations.
  • Spot rate negotiations and contract rate negotiations.
  • Make purchase transportation and 3PL warehouse decisions that positively impact Transplace profitability and/or customer costs.
  • Identify, develop, and maintain carrier capacity.

Knowledge and Expertise

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Tools-Ability to leverage Excel and other MS programs, including Word, Outlook, Lync, etc.
  • Knowledge of the Customer's Business-Knowledge and understanding of the customer product, ability to flowchart the customer's basic supply chain, speak the customer's language, understand the customer's key service measures, etc.
  • The Uber Freight Way-Protocols for answering the phone, e-mail, IM, etc. etiquette and professional standards.
  • Transplace Expertise-Understand the Mission, Values and Goals, organizational structure, company history, internal functions, administration, best practices, processes, behavior, the complete Transplace order-to-cash, etc.
  • Geographical Expertise-Geographical understanding of the North American region. Understanding of mileage as it relates to the passage of time.

  • Cost Conscious-Makes sound decisions considering cost/benefit - Accurately estimates expenses in mode selection, route planning, carrier selection, and other decision-making responsibilities - Shows innovation in reducing expenses.
  • Decisive-Displays confidence in the ability to make sound decisions - Supports, explains, and bases decisions on factual/logical information and good judgment - Includes appropriate people in the decision-making process.
  • Objective-Ability to deal with facts, conditions, and the impact on the business of Transplace without distortion from personal feelings and/or emotions.
  • Multi-Tasking-Handles multiple tasks simultaneously - Prioritizes and organizes assignments to use time with significant attention to detail efficiently.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience
  • 6-10 years of transportation-related or customer service experience.
  • Intermediate personal computer Skills include electronic mail, routine database activity, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
  • Complex Systems management, including TMS technologies.
  • Advanced Communication Skills: Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, short correspondence, and memos in English and Spanish. Ability to write correspondence in both English and Spanish. Ability to effectively present information to customers, clients, coworkers, and managers in one-on-one situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables. Ability to interpret various instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Basic Mathematical Skills include adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing into all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret Bar Graphs.
  • Customer Service skills include recognizing the customer's needs and effectively addressing those needs through active solutions or communication of the need to the appropriate personnel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic Transportation knowledge, including equipment and mode types.
  • A reasonable understanding of mileage as it relates to the passage of time. The ability to convert standard time to military time and time based on the various time zones within the Continental U.S. and Canada as required. General knowledge of the locations of the 48 continental states, Mexico and Canada, as required. Ability to use the postal zip code to locate the corresponding region of the country.
