Director, Scientific Engagement

The Scientific Engagement Lead (SEL) will strategically direct internal and external engagement to further advance innovation in drug discovery and to drive the culture of Discovery Research as a highly innovative organization. You will champion outreach to the external scientific environment to learn from and to identify key individuals or areas/institutions of high scientific potential to build strong relations and to foster outreach. The successful candidate will conceptualize and implement events of relevance to Discovery Research with a focus on science and technologies and engage with external organizations including academia and scientific consortia. The SEL will be responsible for strategic relationships to establish BI as a key presence in the US for science and employment and leverage these relationships to build and solidify BI into the external scientific and business ecosystem. You will have regular interactions with Senior Leaders. As the SEL you will pioneer partnerships with external organizations to drive research into the future. You will create partnerships and pathways for external collaboration with the Research Organization through internal synergies as well as engagement of external scientific partners.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Strategically directs internal and external engagements for the Discovery Research organization.
  • Develop a strategy and plan to effectively engage with external organizations (academia, primary education, consortia, governmental affairs group, etc.). Execute on strategy and plans.
  • Conceptualize and implement internal and external events, activities, and programs that highlight innovation in drug discovery and, internally, that further strengthen employee engagement and a culture of scientific innovation.
  • Influence and shape external relationships to create investments to establish BI as a key presence for science and employment.
  • Build BI into the local scientific and business ecosystem.
  • Build strong relations and foster outreach.
  • Leverage the external environment to learn from and to identify key individuals or areas/institutions of high scientific potential.
  • Effectively harness collective external efforts to highlight BI as a leading scientific organization.
  • Translate scientific and investment aspects of discovery work into impactful messaging that promotes BI in academic, business, and community environments.
  • Ensure close collaboration and alignment with IU Communications Team to highlight scientific accomplishments and disseminate a culture of scientific excellence, excitement, and productivity.
  • Serve as an ambassador for the Research organization internally within the broader organization including the IU Communications Team as well as to the external environment.

Requirements:

  • Requires advanced scientific degree (Ph.D. or MS with sufficient experience) from an accredited institution
  • Ten-plus (10+) years of pharmaceutical experience in drug development with experience in an externally facing role.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate a broad network, internally and externally.
  • Ability to build high functioning working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and partners
  • Ability to quickly learn and understand scientific technologies translating the relevance, significance and potential innovation opportunity to drug development.
  • Excellence in scientific communication with the ability to explain complex scientific principles to a broad audience.
  • Enthusiasm and energy with “can-do” attitude; strong entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Creativity in developing innovative strategies to achieve success.
  • Sufficient knowledge to understand the interests and communication preferences for a diverse outreach community.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills across a variety of mediums/channels.
  • Proven track record of effective and active social media use to increase engagement.
  • Effective in leading within an indirect/matrixed environment.
  • Is results-driven, persistent, and resilient in the pursuit of objectives, willing to take on new challenges and works to resolve issues.
  • Comfortable with and effective in presenting to senior leadership on a regular basis.
  • Extensive and broad understanding of discovery research and drug development.
  • Well connected to a broad network in social media space with demonstrated presence and effectiveness.
  • Understanding of social media and external engagement guidelines.
  • Position requires travel up to 50%.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
  • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required).
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
