Under the general direction of the Executive Director of Triton Auxiliary Programs & Services (TAPS), direct and manage the UC San Diego Bookstore main facilities including the Bookstore, Sunshine Market and Audrey’s Café. Provide leadership for the overall management of the Bookstore's retail and support operations while maintaining an organizational structure that provides sufficient staff expertise to achieve goals and implementation of strategies. Plan and manage assets to ensure profitability. Fulfill the Bookstore's purpose to provide retail services to UC San Diego and to be an academic resource that supports the academic mission of the University. Meet or exceed customer expectations for service and book/merchandise selection. Enhance productivity by streamlining internal business processes. Sustain and improve Bookstore staff expertise and satisfaction on the job.
Bachelor's degree in related area or an equivalent combination of experience/training. Substantial knowledge of retail (e.g. campus store) and/or higher education auxiliary operations. Substantial leadership experience in retail and/or higher education.
Strong experience in independent administration and store management including, but not limited to financial and personnel management, retail, business technologies, customer service, operations, marketing, asset protection, receiving and warehousing. Knowledge of retail asset protection programs including loss prevention, surveillance, and auditing functions; cash handling and controls.
Detailed knowledge of college textbook industry and emerging trends, of publishers, ordering and returns process. Detailed knowledge of non-book merchandise normally carried in college stores, vendors, prices, ordering process and relation functions, including optimization of merchandise mix.
Demonstrated management and conflict resolution skills to effectively lead and motivate others. Proven supervisory, leadership, and personnel management skills to effectively administer and manage through others. Thorough knowledge of staff utilization and motivation; ability to plan and manage the work of subordinate supervisors and staff.
Demonstrated ability to recruit, interview, hire, manage and supervise effectively the work of others including setting and meeting performance goals, and conducting performance appraisals. Skill and knowledge to create performance standards and incentive programs that increase morale and productivity.
Proven ability to provide an open climate and create opportunities for employee communication and positive departmental interaction. Demonstrated skill and knowledge in employee development, including the ability to develop and implement effective training programs.
Broad knowledge of organizational processes, protocols and procedures with a focus on budget, account and fund management, and/or personnel management under labor contract(s) and personnel policy. Broad knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; and/or accounting and payroll.
Strong knowledge and experience in financial management and accounting practices to develop, implement, analyze, and monitor annual multimillion dollar operating budget. Ability to prepare short and long range forecasts.
Demonstrated knowledge and skill in marketing and merchandising concepts to develop programs and conduct research. Strong marketing skills sufficient to determine markets and communication techniques best suited to present products and services.
Superior business development skills. Strong knowledge and experience in negotiating terms, contracts, inter-department agreements, and service contracts. Experience in managing internal and external vendor contracts and performance.
Demonstrated experience and proven skill and knowledge in strategic planning, including ability to develop and implement a strategic plan.
Broad knowledge of common computer application programs. Proficient computer knowledge to provide guidance, administer and manage retail computer systems including, but not limited to inventory, sales processing, forecasting, database management, financial reporting and analysis.
Proven skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution. Strong ability in establishing and implementing policy. Strong ability to exercise good judgment in making high level management decisions and commitments. Ability to resolve issues and exercise diplomacy in stressful situations.
Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple important priorities. Proven ability to organize department work functions in an efficient and effective manner.
Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to influence and persuade all levels of staff. Significant skill and experience with faculty engagement and collaboration.
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with diverse groups including staff, students, faculty, external customers and vendors. Skill to work collaboratively with other locations. Ability to maintain exceptional working relationships.
DOJ/FBI and DMV background checks and clearances required prior to employment.
Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver License and may be required to participate in the DMV Pull Notice Program.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $78,900 - $179,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $37.79 - $86.16
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
