Job Description
REPORTING:
Toolpusher, and/or Senior Toolpusher
SUPERVISION:
Supervises Assistant Driller, Derrickhand, Pumphand, Floorhand
PRE-REQUISITE/QUALIFICATION:
  • Must be able to work in the United States of America without visa sponsorship.
  • High School Diploma (U.S.)/ Proof of Completion of Formal Education or Relevant Craft Certificate (where applicable)
  • Successful Military Discharge – Preferred for U.S.
  • Graduate of Trade School or University where knowledge and training acquired are applicable to job requirements – Preferred
  • Valid medical examination and vaccination certificates
  • Successful completion of at least one D-CAP Assessment (Onshore or Offshore) / Successful completion of (Onshore and Offshore) D-Cap Assessment.
  • Knowledge of all technical calculations required for the safe operation within the drilling operations.
  • Basic computer skills
  • Valid Well Control certificate per the standard defined on the training matrix
  • Norway Specific: Must hold qualifications in accordance with relevant authority requirements and the requirements of the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (PSAN ref. NS D010/NOG 024)
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

OPERATIONAL DISCIPLINE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Disciplined application and participation in the Task Planning & Risk Assessment Process.
  • Understanding and perform the roles and responsibilities as assigned at the pre-job meeting.
  • Understanding and effectively implementing the control measures required to mitigate identified hazards.
  • Execute all tasks and task steps in a disciplined manner, following the sequence detailed in the relevant procedures.
  • Recognize at risk behavior or conditions during tasks and call ‘Time out for Safety’ when unsure, or when the job does not go as planned.
  • Participate in After Action Reviews to feedback lessons learned from performing the task.
HSE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Report all incidents, potential hazards or abnormal situations to supervisors.
  • Actively execute work in accordance with Company Safety Processes, e.g. START, Task Planning Risk Assessment and use of the Prompt Card, Safe Manual Handling, Working at Heights, Job by Design and etc.
  • Call a Time Out for Safety (TOFS) when you do not understand the plan, when an unsafe condition is observed, or perceived, anytime personal impairment is recognized, when it’s not clear what will happen next, or the hazards and associated risks for the task changes.
  • Participate in the execution of the rigs ‘Hold the Zero’ plan.
  • Comply with the company requirements to safeguard ‘lone workers.’
  • Maintain a safe and organized work area throughout all tasks and on completion of tasks.
  • Incorporate the Task Planning and Risk Assessment process into all tasks, whether working alone or as part of a team.
  • Apply the START process during the execution of planned tasks and daily operations. Ensure subordinate personnel are properly trained in the START process.
  • Ensure subordinates are trained prior to using the permit to work (PTW) process. Approve all PTW as designated by the Master/OIM through the Control of Work Process; Ensure all task steps and controls are understood and any other activities that may be affected are identified before approving the PTW.
  • Call a Time Out for Safety (TOFS) whenever an unplanned hazard or a change in the expected results is observed.
  • Ensure that the Company Management System (CMS) and other programs are communicated to and understood by all personnel.
  • Play an active part in the weekly meetings, FOCUS Improvement Program, and all other Company safety management systems.
  • Ensure that a high standard of hygiene and housekeeping is maintained within the Areas of Responsibility.
  • Ensure that subordinates understand their roles as related to the Emergency Response Plan and are capable of responding to emergency situations as designated on the station bill.
  • Ensure all required well control drills are performed and evaluate all personnel’s responses; Conduct After Action Reviews and ensure that findings are communicated to the crew and lessons learned captured.
  • Ensure that DROPS inspections are conducted as per the rig’s DROPS inspection program.
  • Actively coach and enforce Hands Free Operations at all times
  • Actively coach and enforce use of Safe Step Back Areas and adherence to Job by Design
DUTIES:
The underlying expectation is that all duties are carried out in compliance with the Company Operational Discipline expectations and HSE requirements. When considering assignment of duties for the Driller, the Supervisor and the Driller will apply the rules of task planning (CAKES) to determine if the assigned role is appropriate. This means confirming that the individuals involved have the knowledge, skills, and experience to carry out the task, and the task plan complies with policy before they are authorized to proceed.

GENERAL DUTIES:
Operations/Maintenance:
  • Operate all equipment at the Driller’s console in a safe manner; maintain a clean, organized, hazard-free condition on the drill floor and associated areas.
  • Monitor the well condition at all times (i.e. depth, flow show, gain / loss, torque, pump pressure, ECD, mud weight, weight on bit, etc.); Recognize, interpret and respond to down hole conditions.
  • Perform drilling-related operations such as directional drilling, working stuck pipe, running and cementing casing strings, coring, fishing, and assisting in wireline logging, well testing, and other special operations.
  • Conduct all Drilling Operations in compliance with the Drillers Key Responsibilities.
  • Supervise and direct operations in the picking up or laying down of tubular and all drilling-related equipment.
  • Maintain accurate BHA record of tubular and tool dimensions (i.e. internal and external diameter, fish neck, handling profiles and serial numbers etc.).
  • Ensure that the solid control equipment and mud mixing operations are being monitored constantly.
  • Inform Toolpusher/Senior Toolpusher and Client Representative if a deviation from planned operation occurs.
  • Keep accurate records of fluid displacement when tubulars are run in/pulled out of well.
  • Complete the IADC daily drilling report (GMS) at the end of each tour.
  • Hold pre-tour meeting with the drilling crew for all drilling operations.
  • Secure the well during an emergency or well control situation; assist in the well-killing operations.
  • Supervise the lubrication and maintenance of all drilling and associated equipment and ensure it is carried out in accordance with the Preventive Maintenance System (AIM).
  • Maintain equipment files, drilling logs and records; perform all technical calculations required to carry out drilling operations.
  • Operate all equipment at the Driller’s console in a safe manner during the running and retrieving of marine risers and BOP stack.
  • Assist in the planning, organization and supervision of rig move operations.
  • Verify accurate tallies of all tubulars required for well construction activities
  • Confirm wellbore geometry accepts all tools planned to be ran for well construction activities
  • Take necessary precautions to ensure nothing drops in the hole
  • Norway Specific: Ensure that all lifting operations area are performed in accordance with NORSOK R003 “safe use of lifting equipment”.
Personnel:
  • Promote and maintain good working relationships with other departments, third-party personnel and Customer representatives.
  • Ensure all Drilling personnel meet the training requirements as per their applicable training matrix.
  • Mentor, coach, develop and train crew members to ensure they are competent to work at their next job level.
  • Provide leadership and motivation to the drilling crews. Apply continuous improvement process.
  • Mentor the Assistant Driller and deputize when operations, security of well, and personnel safety are not at risk.
  • Assist in training to ensure that all personnel are competent to perform their allocated jobs.
  • Participate fully in the performance appraisal process.
  • Apply appropriate accountability regarding recognition; recommend promotion or disciplinary action up to and including discharge.
