Earn & Learn Classroom Counselor

Overview:

Do you want to make a difference in your community and learn valuable job skills all while earning your BA? If so, Seneca’s Earn & Learn Classroom Counselor role is designed for you.

Reach University is a nonprofit university preparing the next generation of leaders to champion equity in marginalized communities. Through its job-embedded learning model, Reach enables its students to gain professional experience while earning a bachelor’s degree for under $75/month.

Through Seneca’s partnership with Reach’s Oxford Teachers College Program, you’ll have the unique opportunity to work as a classroom counselor at one of our Alameda or Contra Costa partnership schools while earning credit towards your Reach University bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies for Teachers.

Seneca’s Classroom Counselors are key members of our school teams, guiding students to achieve academic success no matter what challenges they may be facing. Our Classroom Counselors help the school team employ creative and thoughtful community-tested practices to celebrate the diversity of our students and weave our families’ cultures into a curriculum that addresses each child’s needs. As a classroom counselor, you’ll gain experience in the following:

  • Implement a rich and culturally responsive educational curriculum.
  • Provide successful academic interventions to support students in finding success at school.
  • Collaborate with teachers and therapists to meet our students’ academic and mental health needs.

Seneca Family of Agencies is committed to providing traditionally marginalized communities a network of outstanding mental health, community-based, and educational services. We are committed to building a diverse staff and strongly encourage people of color to apply. Our programs are deeply engaged in conversations and training on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to support equity and justice for the youth, families, and communities we serve.

Responsibilities:
  • Program Duration: 2 years for candidates with an AA degree.
  • Distance learning: All coursework is completed online, so there is no need to travel. Reach currently offers three terms each year: Fall, Spring, and Summer. All students take a full-time workload of approximately 15 credit hours per term. The residency model uses your work in schools for credit towards your degree. Classes are scheduled around work in the evenings and on the weekends.
  • Rigorous Programming: Students should expect to commit 25-hours per week to their education, including class time, studying, and coursework.
  • Incredible Support: Reach is only successful when our students succeed. Every student is assigned to an advisor, who provides hands-on support throughout their time in the university. Reach offers study groups, tutoring sessions, and other great resources to support students on their journey. They also offer small class sizes and professors who deeply understand the reality of a teacher’s day-to-day life because they are living it themselves.
