About the Position:

Williamsburg Adventures is looking for leadership and outdoor adventure enthusiasts to serve as a mentor to students in both outdoor and leadership Adventures courses in specifically assigned areas throughout Utah. The first Adventures portion is an outdoors, in-person course offered by Williamsburg Adventures, in partnership with Leadership Academy of Utah, for students in grades 6-12. Students in this course will earn PE credit for participating in activities like rock-climbing, hiking, canoeing, snow shoeing, skiing, survival skills, first-aid, outdoor games, and more.  The second Adventures portion is focused on building leadership in students while earning elective leadership credit for activities such as attending museums, visiting colleges, going on fieldtrips, service projects, and applying leadership skills in simulations and various activities. 


Adventure Leads will be responsible for the following:


Facilitate Transformational Learning Experiences

- Leads will be responsible for building in transformational experiences, touch-points, and discussions into each adventure. 

- Williamsburg Adventures will provide training on our formula for infusing each experience with meaning. Leads are required to attend all online and in person Friday trainings as a requirement of this position. A training schedule will be provided in advance of the school year. 

- Leads will provide thought-provoking context for each adventure and provide meaningful touch points throughout each adventure which may include 1:1 conversations, group discussions and processing, etc.

- Leads are in charge of facilitating hands-on adventures but do not need to be experts in each activity.  For instance, they may do a rock climbing adventure by arranging for a rock climbing gym to provide the adventure.


Planning & Logistics for Site-Specific Adventures

- Leads are responsible for the pre-semester planning and execution of adventures in their local area each semester. There are 10 adventures per semester held on predetermined Fridays. Most adventures will be held between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm and run for 2-4 hours in length. Outdoor events may include the facilitation of hiking, climbing & rappelling, kayak & stand-up paddleboarding, outdoor games, first-aid training, self-defense, ice skating, snow shoeing, skiing, and winter survival skills.  Leadership Adventures will include field trips, museum visits, service projects, college visits, simulations and hands-on leadership activities. Events need to be proposed to Williamsburg Adventures and approved in advance to make sure the events are in keeping with our model.

- Making logistical arrangements with vendors in advance and working out payment. A credit card will be provided for you for this purpose. All expenses will be reviewed monthly by the Adventures Program Director. Leads will need to use Abacus to submit expenses and reports by the scheduled due dates.

- Keep adventures within the semester budget.

- Serve as the leader at each event and provide direction for Trail Guides and volunteers.  Leads oversee trail guides in their roles.

- Leads should conduct themselves in such a way as they earn the full trust of the group, including students and parents.

- Arrive 30 minutes before the start of the adventure.


Ensure Safety of Assigned Participants

- Adventure Leads are responsible for the safety of students at all times between drop-off and pick-up.

- Leads provide on-site first aid and will maintain a list of contacts and first-aid resources, in addition to carrying basic first aid supplies and medical waivers and releases for all students in attendance.

- Log all safety incidents and report to the Adventures Program Director and, in the event of a serious emergency, the LAU Executive Director.

- Take attendance at each event and be aware of all students’ whereabouts at all times.


Communicate about Site-Specific Adventure Details

- Communicate details of each adventure to all participants, parents and leaders within an established communication rhythm.

- Coordinate with Adventures Program Director as needed.

- Post pictures after each adventure for parents and students.


Academic Coursework and Credit, where applicable

- Set-up the course in canvas each semester by the predetermined deadlines.

- Track that student waivers and medical histories are completed BEFORE the first adventure (students who do not complete these may not participate).

- Verify student completion of adventure reports prior to the adventure.

- Track attendance at each adventure in SIS.

- Work with the Adventures Program Director to assign grades in Canvas and SIS.

- Contact students and parents as needed.

- A 24-hour turnaround for any communication with colleagues, parents and students is required.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be 21 years or older to be considered for this position.
  • Valid and current driver’s license
  • Outdoor and leadership experience
  • Experience working with students in grades 6-12
  • Current First Aid & CPR certification
  • Excellent administrative skills (planning, organizing, communication)Ability to:Provide transformational mentoring to youth
  • Be vulnerable and authentic
  • Show energy and enthusiasm for being in the outdoors and challenging oneself in various settings
  • Pass background check
  • Leads must be able to use various programs (SIS, Canvas, Zoom. Asana, Abacus, google suite), you will be trained on these


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in similar leadership and outdoor programs.
  • Experience working with students in grades 6-12.


Physical Abilities
  • This position requires physical agility and stamina.
  • Walking, hiking, running, standing, lifting, and bending will be a routine part of this position.
  • Employees will need to be able to keep visual cues on students and be able to hear them.
  • Leads must have the physical ability to facilitate and lead students safely on adventures in various settings.


Compensation & Schedule
  • Pay rate is $19 per hour, including training and preparation time.
  • Mileage reimbursement for traveling to and from Adventures.
  • Adventures are held on 10 predetermined Fridays each semester throughout the geographical region, along with some required flexible remote work throughout the week.
  • Adventure and semester setup takes up to 20 hours before the semester starts. 
  • Training will be held prior to the semester's start and will be 20 hours maximum.
  • This is a part-time position 8 - 10 hours per week with most of the hours taking place on Adventure Fridays during normal school hours. 
  • The remainder of the 10 hours maximum is flexible throughout the week and will include required trainings that are typically under 2 hours on predetermined Fridays when there is not an adventure scheduled.
