We’re looking for a newsroom leader with vision, superior editing ability and entrepreneurial drive to oversee a major expansion of POLITICO in California. No state has more influence on the American body politic and on national – and international – policymaking than California. It boasts the world’s fourth largest economy and is a stage for gripping political and legislative dramas. That’s why POLITICO brought its distinctive brand of political journalism to California in 2015 with the launch of California Playbook, and then built a formidable team covering policy in Sacramento for professional subscribers in 2018. Now, as political power increasingly shifts from Washington to state capitals, POLITICO is deepening its investment in California. We have to own the political and policy story here like only POLITICO can. We have to break through with distinctive and high impact journalism – and need to build our team to do just that. Working closely with POLITICO’s senior editors and business leaders, the California expansion editor will map out – and then execute – a plan to expand our indispensable California policy and legislative coverage for professional policy subscribers, deepen our reporting on the personalities and power players driving politics at the state capitol in Sacramento and launch a new team covering influence and politics in Los Angeles. The editor will leader build and oversee a large staff in California and guide our journalism on California – be it on the politics in Sacramento, the climate crisis or how developments in California resonate beyond its borders. The ideal candidate is a builder of teams with a passion for journalism and an interest in the media business, and a keen collaborator with colleagues in different places and departments.
The base salary range for this role is $175,000-$225,000 per year. The final salary offered, which may be higher than the current anticipated salary range, to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and years of experience within the job, type and years of experience within the industry, education, etc.
In addition to base salary, we offer on-going career development coaching, a flexible vacation plan, fully paid six-month parental leave, 401k match, medical, dental, and vision insurance, phone and commuting reimbursements, and more.
We are driven by our values. We are relentless contributors, disruptors of the status quo, collaborators, talent cultivators and DEI stewards. Our culture is defined by grit, total integrity and a prioritization on innovation.
We value our people. We offer a competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits package, including health and wellness benefits, commuter and cell phone reimbursements, retirement plans, as well as work-life balance flexibility and opportunities for career development.
