Editorial Assistant, Hogarth (Fiction/NonFiction)
Hogarth, an imprint at Penguin Random House, seeks an Editorial Assistant to join its team. The assistant will provide administrative and editorial support to Hogarth’s Editor-in-Chief and Executive Editor on a list of literary fiction & nonfiction. This position offers the opportunity for a hands-on experience in the editorial process and the inner workings of a publishing office.
Named in honor of Virginia and Leonard Woolf’s Hogarth Press, today’s Hogarth publishes fiction and non-fiction by authors of exceptional talent who are deeply engaged with the world, emphasizing new perspectives and boundary-pushing voices. A boutique literary imprint of Random House, our writers include such prizewinners and bestsellers as Sally Rooney, Javier Zamora, Han Kang, Namwali Serpell, Mariana Enriquez, Anthony Marra, Anuk Arudpragasam, Sarah Manguso, and Fatima Farheen Mirza. Forthcoming publications include new books by Sarah Broom, Kiran Desai, Julia Phillips, Chigozie Obioma, and Angie Kim.
At Hogarth, the Editorial Assistant acts as a liaison between authors, agents, and different departments within Penguin Random House. Daily responsibilities include all-around project support for both editors and deep involvement in all stages of the publishing process. The Assistant will read submissions alongside the editors, attend editorial and author meetings, draft marketing copy, and ensure Hogarth’s books are on schedule as they make their way toward publication. Other responsibilities include tracking the imprint’s important deadlines, transmitting manuscripts, routing contract requests, following up on requests from our publishing departments, and generally being the administrative go-to person for Hogarth.
The Editorial Assistant should be highly motivated, superbly organized, enthusiastic about publishing, and enjoy reading broadly and often. (In fact, we would love to know what kind of adult fiction and nonfiction books you’re passionate about in your cover letter.) We are looking for a detail-oriented, meticulous self-starter who cares deeply about literature and the literary world and is invested in the process of bringing them to a wide readership, has strong writing and analytical skills, communicates clearly, and will be an active participant in a collaborative team. The ideal candidate will manage a diverse set of responsibilities efficiently and effectively and is comfortable asking for help when needed.
The position of editorial assistant at Hogarth is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities, which will include but not be limited to executing mailings, participating in and contributing to in-person meetings with authors and agents, and providing office support by scheduling meetings, prepping for department and author meetings, managing expense reports, archiving, maintaining hard copy and electronic files, etc. We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT, & PA).
