Education and Outreach Library Assistant

The Libraries physical spaces consist of the Langson Library, the Science Library, the Library Gateway Study Center, and the Grunigen Medical Library. The Education and Outreach Department leads the UCI Libraries’ outreach and instruction activities and programs, which emphasize information literacy, research skills, critical thinking, pedagogical development, and student engagement. The Department coordinates, integrates, and assesses library instruction and outreach activities, including coordinating instruction for required undergraduate writing courses, leading orientations, developing outreach programming with campus partners, and creating online tutorials and learning objects.
Reporting to the Head of Education & Outreach (E&O), provides assistance in teaching, instructional services, outreach, and reference services. Teaches multiple sessions per quarter of information literacy workshops in support of lower-division undergraduate courses including, but not limited to, Writing 60 and Humanities Core. Assists with other aspects of instructional services, including scheduling workshops, maintaining the instruction request form and the instruction statistics database, and maintaining information literacy tutorials, or other learning objects such as instructional videos. Provides basic reference assistance through chat, lower division research consultations, or other services. Assists with coordinating library outreach initiatives. Helps prepare budget and statistical reports, schedules department meetings, and organizes departmental documents. Participates in library-wide activities and group projects.

$27.82 - $36.42 (Hourly Rate)


Required:
BS/BA Degree. Minimum of 3 years of experience working in libraries or educational environments, or a combination of relevant experience and education.
Completion of college-level courses sufficient to teach research skills primarily in the humanities and social science and or equivalent experience/training. Strong commitment to library education and outreach services. Ability to use a personal computer, Microsoft Office suite, Internet resources, e-mail, computer printers, and any other necessary tools or equipment. Facility in learning new software, including spreadsheets, databases, and Web interfaces. Excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with library colleagues, faculty, students, and the general public. Experience and demonstrated skill in teaching to groups. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team setting, while having the flexibility to handle a variety of colleagues and students in a library setting. Ability to work in a research library and to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities. Ability to use technology to support teaching and learning. Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality, and inclusiveness within UCI Libraries and the campus. Ability to perform detail-oriented tasks efficiently and effectively. Ability to work independently, exercise effective judgment, be flexible, juggle and prioritize multiple simultaneous tasks, and demonstrate initiative. Ability to maintain work schedule and meet deadlines despite frequent interruptions and distractions.


Preferred:
Familiarity with current, new, and emerging library information technologies. Demonstrated experience of working with library research resources such as commercial and academic databases, discovery systems, and Lib-guides.


Special Conditions Required:
A few times a year with advance notice, this position may be asked to work evening hours for instruction or events.
