The mission of The Teaching + Learning Commons (The Commons) is to advance student success through teaching excellence and comprehensive academic student support; to be an incubator for student academic success innovations; to increase access to education on campus and beyond; and to advance equity and inclusion within the organization and through its programs and services. The Commons’ work encompasses four areas: instructor support to advance teaching excellence; undergraduate and graduate student support to advance student success at UC San Diego and beyond; intellectual and professional development of graduate and undergraduate students, including Commons’ student employees; and equity and inclusion for all UC San Diego students, staff, and educators.

The Commons promotes faculty and student success through programs and resources that support faculty and graduate students in their teaching roles. The programs and services of The Commons serve the entire university’s teaching community, including ladder-rank professors, teaching professors, non-Senate lecturers, and adjuncts, as well as graduate students working as teaching assistants and postdoctoral scholars preparing to enter the faculty ranks in the future.
With general direction from the Director of Engaged Teaching, the Education Specialist, English Language Development, works collaboratively and creatively with UC San Diego graduate students, faculty, and The Commons staff to support educator development, training and create instructional resources for international and local graduate students and faculty to effectively deliver instruction in English to support teaching excellence with a goal toward faculty and student success.
Incumbent responsibilities include: designing, delivering, and assessing educational and training programs and services across disciplines that support scholarly, evidence-based teaching, and learner-centered curriculum design; providing individual and departmental consulting on teaching effectiveness; providing formative feedback on teaching practices, course materials, and course design; researching, training and developing online teaching resources; contributing to the scholarship of teaching and learning; and providing leadership, training and support for the Commons and the university's teaching and learning initiatives. The Education & Training Specialist will also serve on university teaching-related committees and projects as needed.
Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
Bachelor's degree in curriculum and instruction, adult education, instructional design, training or a related field required with a minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in a higher education environment, and experience working with faculty members; or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Experience working with English-language learners.
Experience contributing to cutting edge developments in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
Thorough knowledge of applying adult learning theories and education methodologies. Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning theory and practices and their application to the development of training programs and services that support educators in improving teaching practices.
Demonstrated ability to assess needs and develop strategies to support diversity, equity, and inclusion. Knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Strong analytical, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills and strong presentation skills. Demonstrated ability to design and deliver research-informed presentations to both large and small groups as well as to communicate effectively on a one-to-one basis.
Ability to independently manage complex tasks, with competing demands for time and resources without sacrificing quality and attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to work individually, in partnership or as part of a team.
Strong skills to conduct needs assessment and development of new training courses to meet organizational needs. Experience in the design and development of instructional materials, educational experiences, and learning assessments on a various training programs.
Experience in recruiting, hiring and training TESOL instructors to teach courses, programs, workshops and seminars. Experience in recruiting, training, supervising and evaluating performance of student employees.
Thorough knowledge and skills with relevant business software systems; i.e., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint. Knowledge of and experience with Google business tools and educational technology tools.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $53,600 - $111,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $25.67 - $53.45
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
