Energy Market Design Analyst

The ISO's Market Development group propels the New England region's efforts to design and enhance the competitive wholesale electricity markets. Our objective is to ensure the markets provide cost-effective and reliable services, and work harmoniously with the public policy objectives of the region such as the ongoing transition to renewable resources and economy-wide electrification. The Market Design Analyst is a technical expert and leader shaping necessary market enhancements.

As a Market Design Analyst, your primary responsibilities will involve researching and analyzing market-related problems, developing and recommending solution options, and engaging stakeholders as a subject matter expert. The impact of these efforts is significant, as market design changes can impact how many millions of dollars of capital are deployed and/or how many millions of dollars of costs are settled.

This role will offer rewarding opportunities if you are:
  • Energized (pun intended) by the prospect that markets can support the energy system transition.
  • Motivated to work in a team and collaborate to solve multi-dimensional and technical problems.
  • Willing to take a central role in projects that must address a broad array of stakeholder needs.
Our department is comprised of economists, engineers, markets analysts, and data analysts. The team has diverse skills and backgrounds including various fields of economics, mathematics, energy trading and resource operations, market administration, optimization models, auction design, business process and project management. We work collaboratively within our team and across the company, and with the many entities that have a stake in New England’s wholesale electricity markets.

How you will make an impact

Working with multi-departmental project teams, you will:
  • Define problems in market performance or administration using research and analysis of technical documents, implementation systems, or policy materials.
  • Evaluate solution options by defining objectives and employing quantitative and qualitative analyses that substantiates efficacy and clarifies trade-offs.
  • Recommend changes and represent them to diverse stakeholder groups, including preparing detailed documentation and presentations.
  • Support filings of market changes with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), including providing expert witness testimony.
What we are looking for
  • Bachelor or Master's degree in Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Business, Finance, Management Science, or other related discipline.
  • Knowledge of energy market design or administration, power system operations, energy commodity trading, or energy industry analysis.
  • Experience performing technical research and/or analysis, defining a problem or opportunity, and shaping the plan to execute a change.
  • Ability to interpret and explain complex processes and relationships, using principles of logic, statistics, and economics.
  • Ability to lead project teams, meet deadlines, communicate clearly, navigate obstacles, and present to varied audiences.
Desired not required
  • Experience using statistical analysis, simulation models, or database query tools (e.g., SAS, Matlab, SQL, Excel).
  • Knowledge of software and systems used by ISOs (e.g., clearing and pricing algorithms, settlement systems, bid submittal systems).
