About the Role
The Software team is responsible for the software, firmware, and embedded operating system that powers our robotic liquid handling platform and peripherals. We’re looking for an Engineering Lead that will lead the team responsible for building and maintaining the API services that empower our users. An Engineering Lead at Opentrons is a player-coach role that guides their team of direct reports and collaborates with product and design teams to deliver customer-driven outcomes. In addition to delivery and technical responsibilities, the Engineering Lead will also be responsible for guiding and developing engineers on their team through regular 1:1s and career growth plans.

The ideal candidate has a proven track record of empowering people and delivering customer value. They have strong opinions (loosely held) about architecting reliable, flexible, and performant systems in both offline and cloud environments.

This is a hybrid position, spending at least 50% of the week in our Brooklyn office and the rest of the time is remote.

What You Will Do
  • Develop and execute technical project plans to expose capabilities on our platform while maintaining backwards compatibility through intentional API versioning
  • Collaborate with engineering, product management and design teams to deliver a reliable platform
  • Collaborate with both Embedded and App/UI software teams
  • Contribute code alongside the team in a manner that enables delivery without creating bottlenecks
  • Advocate for engineering-driven initiatives into project prioritization, while articulating complex concepts to non-developers
  • Manage, mentor, coach, and grow an exceptional team of software engineers
  • Engage with our open source community


What We Are Looking For
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or other relevant field (BS in Engineering, etc.)

Experience:
  • 3+ years of engineering management
  • 6+ years experience of writing code for customer-facing products
  • Strong experience with Linux, Python, custom API development
  • Experience with git, git actions


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong software engineering skills and fundamentals
  • Excitement to work in a distributed, multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience guiding teams to create well-tested, resilient applications
  • Interest in biology and an eagerness to learn

Extra Qualifications:
  • Contributions or active maintenance of open-source software
  • Experience maintaining CI/CD pipelines on cloud environments (ex: AWS and software deployments)
  • Experience with Node, JavaScript, TypeScript, and React
  • Experience with embedded devices
  • Biology and/or wet lab experience


Working Conditions and Physical Effort
  • Work is performed in a typical interior/office work environment
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Limited physical effort required

Compensation Range: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $165,000-$175,000/yr; base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and years of experience. We typically target mid-range for well-qualified candidates. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including equity and full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
