Engineering Manager

Our mission

We're building new ways to support our customers in their hour of need.

It's not just about revolutionising customer experience. We want to reduce the distress caused by accidents and personal disasters, and one day remove it altogether!

Over the last 12 months, we've grown from a team of 87 to 200+ and more than doubled our customer base. And over the next 24 months, we’re looking to help thousands more customers by launching new products and services across different categories and countries.

If you're looking for a challenge, our next chapter is set to be an exciting one.

How we work

We've created a culture of trust which allows us to work autonomously without fear of failure, to challenge decisions, and be heard. It empowers us to drive our own careers and to move at unparalleled speed. And because we're treading new ground, we're all mastering new skills along the way.

Engineering at Marshmallow

Our engineers are at the heart of the solutions. They work on product builds from start to finish, solving lots of challenges to help us build fast and scale up! Our engineers cover a range of skills across frontend, backend, fullstack, iOS and android, and work alongside designers, data scientists, researchers and product managers within our product teams.

Our product teams include: the new Home team, the Growth team, the Efficiency team, and the Claims team (to name a few!) Each team sets its own roadmap, and actively pushes our codebase forward.

What you’ll be doing

We run small cross-functional teams who have high autonomy and ownership. We get things done, moving fast with more than 120 production releases a week with a modern tech stack. These systems provide our customers with affordable and inclusive car insurance through us directly, and through integrating our systems with globally recognised partner comparison websites.

As an Engineering Manager in Marshmallow you will own software development and delivery in your team. You will be working closely with your Product Manager to understand and shape the team’s roadmap, and you will be leading its resourcing, planning and execution. You will be an advocate for long-term engineering success to the senior leadership team, working closely with your Teach Lead to propose and drive initiatives to improve the robustness, reliability and scalability of our systems. You will play a key role in coaching every engineer on the team and helping them set objectives that will drive their careers forward. You will work with the team to improve their processes and ways of working. Outside of the team you’ll also be supporting the wider Engineering Management team with hiring exceptionally talented engineers and shaping Marshmallow into a fantastic place to work.

Requirements

Who you are

As a young business in a challenging global environment we are constantly reviewing our ways of working to adapt and succeed. To thrive in this role, above all you will need to demonstrate a great degree of end-to-end ownership. Besides that, you will be demonstrating the following:

  • You have an empathetic leadership style and you build strong, effective relationships. You understand when to give support and when to coach an engineer to find their own solution
  • You understand the importance of feedback, how to give constructive feedback and how to ask for feedback to become a better manager
  • You are open and honest and encourage others to do the same
  • You know when to pick up a task yourself and when you can delegate to create learning opportunities for others
  • You set a good example to the rest of the team on how to balance delivery and taking care of yourself to avoid burnout
  • You are proactive and happy to volunteer to lead new initiatives or offer support to others
  • You would like to help Marshmallow build a world-class engineering organisation, working with other engineering managers, sharing best practices and lessons learned from your past experience

What we're looking for from you

  • 2+ years experience managing high-performing teams
