Enterprise Data Center Technician

Position Overview

The Enterprise Data Center Technician has two primary job responsibilities: Enterprise Job Scheduling Management and Data Center Operations Management. Responsible for ensuring deadlines are met within all production departments through scheduling workloads, ensuring proper escalation of job aborts, restarts, force completions, and/or cancels according to job documentation.

This position will interface with constituents, clients, and support staff throughout KU's campus. Technicians are responsible for monitoring, troubleshooting, and reporting all issues within the Data Center and the Enterprise Network across campus. Enterprise Data Center Technicians are tasked with incident management, communications, and disaster recovery operations.

Job Description

45% - Enterprise Job Scheduling Management:
  • Creates and maintains accurate schedules as well as communicates deadlines to appropriate departments
  • Manages the workflow between internal and external sources
  • Troubleshoot errors in schedules and recognize redundant processes or tasks and look for ways to automate
  • Performs follow-up on job scheduler-related incidents and assists with the resolution, interfacing with both internal & external customers
  • Creates reports using various job scheduler tools for internal use as well as for customer requests and management
  • Collaborate with team members to brainstorm and create new scripts to improve various processes, minimize manual interventions, and increase productivity.
45% - Data Center Operations Management:
  • Monitor and respond to data center environmental, mechanical, security, network, and server monitoring systems assuring the health of KU's Data Center and Enterprise Network.
  • Regularly review, understand, and update existing Data Center Operations manuals and procedures to ensure they align with industry best practices.
  • Troubleshoot issues and incidents as they occur, employing problem resolution, escalating as necessary, working with other support teams, and following appropriate procedures
  • Assist with Disaster Recovery planning and exercises
  • Serve as Major Incident Manager during an incident, following documented processes.
  • Stay updated with the industry trends and advancements with job scheduling, DC operations, and IT security.
10% - Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements

This position is required, on a rotating basis, to be on standby status.

Security Profile:
  • This position shares the responsibility for information security by following all applicable security policies and procedures.
  • This position is authorized to use elevated privilege accounts in the performance of job duties.
  • This position is authorized to issue password resets by established procedures in the performance of job duties.
  • This position is authorized to handle sensitive or confidential data by established procedures in the performance of job duties.
  • This position is authorized to provision and de-provision user accounts and access by established procedures in the performance of job duties.
  • This position is authorized to manage, provision, and deprovision IT assets by established procedures in the performance of job duties.
  • This position is authorized to configure, manage, and monitor network traffic in the performance of job duties.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED and two years of relevant experience.
  • Two years of experience monitoring in an enterprise atmosphere.
  • Two years of customer service experience.
  • Good communication skills as evidenced in application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Specific experience with UC4 job scheduler
  • Two (2) years of experience with job scheduling packages
  • Professional Data Center Operations experience
  • One (1) year of project management experience
  • Two (2) years of experience with PGP file-level encryption/decryption, SSL server certificate encryption
  • One (1) year of professional experience with Unix, Linux, or Windows server operations
  • One (1) year experience with data center environmental, power, or mechanical systems monitoring.
  • Scripting experience with a common server scripting language such as Perl, bash, etc.
