Environmental Program Manager

US-PA-Allentown, US-TX-Houston

Job Description and Qualifications

Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., a Fortune 500 industrial gases company, has an immediate opening for an Assurance Program Manager in our EH&S Excellence Organization. The position can be located at our global headquarters in Allentown, PA, our Houston, TX location, anywhere remotely in the U.S., Shanghai, or Malaysia.

The Assurance Program Manager is responsible for conducting audits of Air Products' facilities, compliance with regulations and internal procedures in the environmental area, and particularly compliance with federal, state, and local air pollution, water pollution, and waste management related regulations, and for assessing and communicating the relative risk of any noncompliance identified.

When designated as lead auditor, you are required to plan and arrange logistical details of assigned on-site facility Environment, Health, and Safety (EH&S) audits, lead the on-site portion of the audit, conduct the detailed on-site review of compliance with designated EH&S functional areas which may include air pollution control, hazardous and solid waste management, water pollution control, spill prevention, underground storage tank management, and community right-to-know regulations and internal procedures; and develop and distribute a formal EH&S audit report for each audit. On other audits where you are an “audit team member”, you will conduct the detailed on-site review of designated EH&S functional areas as part of the larger audit team. You will also provide expertise and support to the Environmental and Operating teams to communicate audit issues and trends, and to assist in developing compliance improvement plans and actions.

This position is one of four Assurance Program Manager positions in the Central EH&S Assurance Group. Each Program Manager acts as “audit lead” for designated facility audits and participates as an “audit team member” on additional audits. The role of audit lead requires the assigned Program Manager to arrange all logistics of the audit, contracting local 3rd party functional and language expertise for assistance with audits outside of the U.S. as necessary; agreeing on the detailed audit schedule with the other audit team members and plant staff; managing the on-site activities of the audit including opening meetings, daily debriefing of plant staff, and a final closing meeting with plant staff to review findings; and developing and distributing the final audit report. In addition, each Program Manager also conducts the actual detailed audit of the facility in their area of functional EH&S expertise during each audit. This position’s area of functional EH&S expertise is air pollution control, hazardous and solid waste management, water pollution control, spill prevention, underground storage tank management, and community right-to-know regulations and requirements.

Principal Accountabilities:
  • Act as lead auditor and audit team member on EH&S audits of Air Products facilities worldwide.
  • Assess the relative risk to the corporation of noncompliance issues discovered during EH&S audits.
  • Maintain proficiency and knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements at our operating plants and maintain audit protocols for the assigned EH&S functional areas.
  • Communicate audit issues and trends in the above EH&S functional areas to appropriate members of the Environmental and Global Operations teams and work with those teams to develop appropriate action plans and solutions.

Qualifications:
  • 10-15 years’ experience in an environmental function in a chemical, industrial gas, or related industry manufacturing environment, or in operations roles with significant exposure to environmental compliance systems and standards.
  • Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering or equivalent degree.
  • Demonstrated strong planning, organization, and execution skills.
  • Mature judgment in assessing the risk of noncompliance to the corporation.
  • Strong communication skills with all levels of the organization from the shop floor to senior management.
  • Certification as an EH&S Auditor or ability to obtain certification within two years of employment.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally – expect to travel approximately 40% of the time.
