Equipment Engineer

About the Company

Our purpose at Talis Biomedical is to advance health equity and outcomes by delivering accurate infectious disease testing in the moment of need, at the point of care.

While timely diagnosis of infectious diseases is critically important to enable effective treatment, testing is primarily performed in centralized laboratories, which require samples to be shipped for processing, delaying the return of results by days. Point-of-care testing solves this problem by delivering the timely information necessary for clinical care.

To deliver our purpose we focus on three things:

  • Putting customers and patients first
  • Making Talis a great place to work
  • Living our values to Dream Big, Share Our Screens, Serve Others, Bring Our "A" Game, and Build Trust

Position Summary

This position will report to the Associate Director of Automation and will be responsible for the implementation and management of service, calibration, and spares programs for critical production equipment, in addition to identifying and leading execution of improvement opportunities. The Equipment Engineer will also lead and assist with identifying, spec'ing, designing, and deploying next generation production equipment and processes, where applicable.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and implement maintenance, service, calibration, and spares programs for all critical, internal manufacturing equipment - ensuring downtime is minimized
  • Drive continuous improvement of existing machines and equipment, ensuring changes are approved, documented, and tested
  • Assist with automating existing manual processes and the scale-up of fully automated production lines
  • Design and procure (or fabricate in-house) custom fixtures, tools, and machines to enable more efficient and reliable processes
  • Manage acceptance testing, installation, and commissioning of new production equipment
  • Generate RFPs and URSs for new equipment projects
  • Follow industry standards and best practices and, where applicable, help develop and author supplemental, internal equipment standards
  • If necessary, participate in Root Cause Analyses (RCAs) to help identify causes of equipment or process deviation
  • Work directly with automation shops and machine builders to manage procurement of new, custom manufacturing equipment
  • Perform work in a manner that is safe to personnel, surroundings, and equipment – fostering a safe work environment for all
  • Exercise judgment, based on previous experience, practices and precedents, to identify and solve problems that arise with little or no precedent
  • Develop and author SOPs and Work Instructions, and provide training and continuous feedback to team members to ensure adherence to procedures

Education/Skills/Requirements

  • BS/MS degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics, or similar
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with and troubleshooting equipment in an industrial or lab setting, preferably with automated systems, industrial machinery, or assembly lines
  • Must be able to follow cGMP and cGLPs, FDA and ISO standards
  • Proficiency in computer systems such as Word, Excel, etc.
  • Proficiency using CAD software (Solidworks preferred)
  • Comfortable using hand and power tools (machining experience preferred)
  • Experience designing and procuring custom parts
  • Experience working directly with pneumatics and electrical systems, including the ability to read and understand the pneumatic/electrical schematics
  • Experience with PLCs, SCADA, or MES preferred
  • Familiarity with and experience writing custom software preferred
  • Work may involve repetitive arm/wrist motions or occasionally lifting objects up to 25 lbs
