Biosolids and Residuals Professional

ERG is seeking talented, motivated biosolids professionals to join our team of NPDES program specialists who support federal and state regulatory agencies. A successful candidate will have ten or more years of experience in wastewater treatment, biosolids, or residual fields. Direct experience with biosolids program development, implementation, or oversight is required, while ideal candidates will also have experience with land application, nutrient management plans, and agronomic rate calculations and verification. Detailed experience with the federal biosolids program and its requirements contained in 40 CFR Part 503 is a plus.


This position is full-time and offers a diverse set of project opportunities, including project management. ERG provides high-quality technical support to U.S. EPA Headquarters, Regions, and states for Clean Water Act (CWA) program implementation, compliance, and enforcement. Our uniquely qualified and dedicated team of CWA program specialists possess real-world experience in implementing the CWA and NPDES programs across the country and understand the challenges EPA and state agencies face.


Job Description:
  • Understanding of the regulatory landscape for biosolids and residuals and challenges/solutions associated with:
  • Assessing biosolids quantity and quality and associated factors
  • Nutrient management plan development, implementation, and oversight
  • Agronomic rate calculations
  • Land application practices and BMPs for minimizing impacts to surface and groundwaters, odor control, vector control, and transport and storage
  • Agricultural practices, revegetation and reclamation practices for disturbed land, land disposal, landfill, or incineration practices
  • Landowner agreements
  • Assessing compliance with 40 CFR Part 503 requirements (in NPDES permits or elsewhere)
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations and industry standards
  • Staying current with industry trends and client needs to inform growth strategies and supporting the development and implementation of strategy and growth initiatives for emerging technologies and industry trends
  • Mentoring and supervising team members to build best-in-class capabilities, building technical bench strength through staff development and recruiting, and developing capabilities to meet business and client needs
  • Serving as a technology leader, recognized as a company and industry expert in residuals, biosolids, and land application approaches


Qualifications and Skills:
  • A degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Agriculture, Environmental Science, Civil or Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Ten or more years of experience with biosolids generation, land application, oversight, or program implementation
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred
  • Organizational and project management skills
  • Effective communication and technical writing abilities
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to work on multiple projects and meet tight deadlines while providing quality client-ready deliverables
  • Willingness to travel to conduct fieldwork
  • Active Member Soil Science Society of America, Active Member American Society of Agronomy, and/or Certified Biosolids Land Applier (Association of Boards of Certification) is beneficial


$75,000 - $125,000 a year

ERG offers competitive salaries and excellent benefits, including health and dental insurance, life insurance, long-term disability, educational benefits, FSAs, a generous 401k plan, profit sharing, an EAP, 11-20 paid vacation days per year, 10 paid holidays per year, 56 hours or more of sick leave (based on the state you work in) per year (pro-rated for part-time) and more. The salary range for all positions depends on the years and type of experience.
