    FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
    Grade: Grade 4
    Compensation: $24.17 – $36.00/hour

    The Student Union, Inc. is 501(c)(3) nonprofit auxiliary that maintains three major facilities at San José State University in downtown San José, California. These facilities include the Diaz Compean Student Union Building, the Provident Credit Union Event Center, and the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center. The Student Union, Inc. functions as part of the Student Affairs Division on campus, and is governed by a Board of Directors made up of a student majority, faculty, and administrators.

    Job Summary
    The Esports Coordinator responsible for the design, development, coordination and budgeting of a comprehensive campus esports program, grounded in practical application of student development and the mission of the College. SU Esports program is a strategic initiative of the Student Union and the Student Affairs with an emphasis on Student Success with focus on student engagement, belonging in alignment with Transformation 2023. The position reports to, and receives general supervision and direction from the Director of Spartan Recreation.

    Essential Functions and Tasks
    • Develop, design, and coordinate all aspects of esports programing to meet the assessed needs, interest, and capabilities of the students.
    • Responsible for hiring, onboarding, training, supervising, scheduling, payroll and oversight of student assistants.
    • Support the overall operation of the Esports program in team operations, events and livestream productions.
    • Direct community gaming events and tournaments.
    • Schedule and manage day to day operations of the Esports location(s)
    • Oversees the schedule of the Esports Lab to include informal recreation, club team usage and program activities.
    • Plan, organize, and document all programming in conjunction with the Student Development and Activities Program Planning & Assessment procedures.
    • Requires expert knowledge of hardware/ software requirements for Esports programming to work with the Information Technology Department to acquire / maintain all necessary equipment for Esports location(s).
    • Performs basic IT gaming maintenance tasks and troubleshooting and communicate major issues and concerns with campus IT.
    • Ensure proper practice of risk management and safety requirements.
    • Assist in hiring, training, evaluating, and managing part-time staff that may be needed to support Esports.
    • Responsible for the supervision and evaluation of Esports student assistants.
    • Oversight of employee scheduling, payroll, and regularly meets and evaluates work performance.
    • Develops and maintains the annual Esports budget for the department.
    • Partner with SUI Marketing department to support the promotion of Spartan Recreation and its programs.
    • Partner with SUI Student Success and Assessment team to ensure learning outcomes are developed and assessed annually for the student staff.
    • Works collaboratively and cooperatively with the partners in the Division of Student Affairs and various departments across campus to facilitate diverse and inclusive Esports activities.
    • Perform additional duties as assigned.
    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
    • Demonstrated experience in administering comprehensive Esports gaming programs and activities.
    • Understanding of the Esport ecosystem and popular titles (Valorant, League of legends, Rocket League, Rainbow Siege, Smash and Apex).
    • Demonstrate knowledge of recreational gaming best practices, the culture of championship play, collegiate rules and regulations, ability to effectively demonstrate gaming technique and skills to student participants.
    • Knowledge and ability to effectively utilize live streaming/broadcasting software on platforms such as Twitch and YouTube.
    • Must have excellent understanding of the esports rules and intricacies of the most widely played competitive games in the esports field, and the ability to play at a level sufficient to coach student athletes and oversee student coaches. Familiarity with team-based multiplayer games such as League of Legends, Hearthstone, Rocket League and others is required.
    • Experience in teaching, and in identifying and analyzing strengths and weaknesses of players and developing strategies for competitive esports at the collegiate level is desired.
    • Demonstrated supervisory or management experience including selecting, training, coordinating, evaluating, and supervising student employees.
    • Ability to communicate clear and concise analytical comments, both orally and in writing.
    • Ability to analyze and interpret accounting data, prepare clear, accurate financial statements and reports.
    • Problem-solving techniques in finding solutions to complex financial problems.
    • Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and principles.
    • Ability to identify trends, irregularities, resolve difficult and unusual problems.
    • Ability to review financial documents for accuracy, completeness, validity, and adherence to standards.
    • Ability to interact effectively and frequently with students, campus community members, vendors and the general public.
    • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, web browsers, query tools, integrated financial systems and/or other types of records management systems.
    • Ability to define problem areas, collect data, perform preliminary analyses and make appropriate recommendations.
    • Excellent customer service, ability to manage conflicts, and create an inclusive environment.
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

    Physical Demands and Work Environment
    • The position works in a wide variety of environments including both a typical office as well as an outdoors and indoor facility program-oriented environment.
    • The physical demands of this position are described below
      • Sitting, walking, twisting, bending, climbing, pulling, pushing, squatting, crawling, kneeling, balancing, reaching, and coordination (eye, hand, foot).
      • Fall (Slip, Trip) Conditions that result in falls (impacts) from height or traditional walking and playing surfaces.
      • Lifting and carrying, frequently 10-25lbs, occasionally 26-50lbs.
    • In general, the position works a schedule based on business needs 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday, may work evenings and weekends as required.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree focused in the area of Sports Management, Business Management or related fields of study.
    • 1-3 years of competitive esports experience involving League of Legends, Overwatch, Rocket League, Rainbow Seige, Smash, Apex, and Valorant, or other multiplayer online video games or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
    • Current CPR and AED certifications required or must be obtained within the first month of employment.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Master’s degree in Recreation, Student Development, or related field
    • Demonstrated experience in large student recreation centers, student unions, student activities, and residence life or student development.
    • Experience in a large, non-profit corporation.
    • Involvement in professional societies and organizations.
    • Demonstrated ability to articulate the role campus life plays in recruitment, student success, retention, and graduation, and a commitment to college student development and student leadership.

    Background Check and Fingerprinting
    Student Union employees are required to undergo and completed a successful background check that includes verification of employment and education, as well as a check of criminal records for employment. Candidates for positions where the employee will come in regular contact with minors and cash management will be required to be fingerprinted. This policy includes emergency hires and may also be applicable to volunteers depending on the work performed.

    In some cases, the background check will include a credit check and/or a Department of Motor Vehicles check, as well as a check of licenses and certificates when applicable. All background checks are conducted through the Student Union third-party vendor, Accurate Background.
