ev.energy set up in 2018 with a simple aim - to make electric vehicle charging simpler, greener, and cheaper for everyone. Drivers download our app and charge their vehicle overnight; and, in the background, we’re ingesting real-time data and using our proprietary smart-charging algorithm to align charging sessions with energy from renewable sources. This reduces carbon emissions caused by EV charging by as much as 70%.
This is a growing industry, with growing demand for our solution - a third of new cars by 2030 will be electric. Simultaneously, there’s increasing strain on the power grid (power outages have already jumped by 64% in the last decade in the USA). We are already working with over 30 utilities in the US, Canada and Europe, offering a way to reduce demand on the grid.
To achieve this we’ve brought together a team of over 100 people, bringing expertise from previous roles at National Grid, Tesla, Amazon, Arcadia, and Chargepoint; we’ve secured over 50m USD from leading VCs in the automotive and energy space including National Grid Partners, WEX Venture Capital, Energy Impact Partners and JLR’s InMotion Ventures. Come help us drive change for the better.
The role
We're looking for an Engineering Manager to join our Energy Management group - they are responsible for creating our vehicle charging sessions, utilising pricing data, carbon data and other data sources to do so. This would involve the people management of 8 engineers co-located in Europe.
What you'll be doing:
You’ll join a cross-functional squad of 8 engineers, providing support alongside Technical Leads to create a high-performing and efficient team capable of solving problems quickly in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
You’ll support and encourage the team as a whole and individuals: encouraging their self-development, celebrating their achievements, and recognising strengths, as well as fostering a culture of helpful feedback and candour
Organising and conducting weekly 1.1s with team members, setting clear directions around career progression and performance expectations and completing performance reviews biannually
Growing the team - you’ll be responsible for raising the hiring bar not only for your team but for the overall organisation
Communicating team goals and vision to the wider organisation
Working alongside the Technical Lead and Product Owner in prioritisation of work, removing blockers and driving efficiency and delivery capability
Contributing to best practices around documentation and engineering leadership within the company
What are we looking for?
Experience in an engineering management or technical leadership role, with the ability to influence, persuade and motivate teams of engineers
Prior experience as a technical lead/architect, with experience building to scale
An understanding of complex engineering challenges, particularly on the backend
Previous experience contributing to architectural change - you'll be passionate about incorporating high performing architectural ideas into existing and new products
Excellent ability to establish trust and build relationships with engineers, peers and stakeholders across the business; you’ll be able to communicate clearly and succinctly
Previous experience building high-performing and autonomous teams, having created metrics to track performance rather than rely on micromanagement
Previous experience conducting (and ideally crafting or shaping) performance reviews and other frameworks
Product-mindedness - you understand the trade-offs between quality and delivering fast and can be pragmatic, with the ability to encourage pragmatism within the team
An understanding of software development best practices
Demonstrated commercial and business awareness - you’ll be able to articulate the purpose of your team’s work in the eyes of the customer and the wider business
Interest or experience in the EV or green energy sector
How will we support you?
Work remotely and work well - we'll provide the tools you need to do your best (including a Macbook Pro), and can provide access to co-working spaces
Access to conferences, meet-ups and training through our L&D allowance
A structured career progression framework and advancement opportunities
Great benefits - including health insurance, 401(k) or pension, paid parental leave
Annual team gatherings - in previous years the whole company has spent a week together in London, Bath and Manchester in the UK
If you don’t have all of the requirements, but you’re really interested in what we’re doing, please apply anyway and we can consider your application now and in future! We value applicants regardless of their background or years of experience. We'll also do our best to accommodate reasonable adjustments to the interview process if needed.
We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity: we do not discriminate based on race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status or disability status. If you'd like a copy of our DE&I policy you can reach us at hiring@ev.energy.
