Fish Hatchery Intern

The selected intern will participate in rearing endangered Atlantic salmon from several listed populations at a cold-water conservation hatchery. Activities include releasing juvenile and adult Atlantic salmon, collecting biological samples for disease screening, feeding adult and juvenile broodstock, cleaning rearing units, conducting monthly growth monitoring of juvenile and adult salmon, maintaining automated feeders, assisting in moving, sorting and grading juvenile salmon, PIT tagging future broodstock, spawning, egg enumeration and care, electrofishing, and stocking multiple life stages of Atlantic salmon. Green Lake National Fish Hatchery (NFH) is open to the public year-round and interns will have the opportunity to interact with visitors by giving tours of the facility or providing other outreach services.

The selected intern will participate in daily maintenance activities at the hatchery which include cleaning rearing units, tanks and pools, grounds maintenance, hiking trail maintenance, hatchery equipment repair, and other general maintenance projects.

The selected intern may have the opportunity to participate in monitoring lake water quality and adult sea-run broodstock collection. The selected intern will work cooperatively with personnel from both Green Lake NFH and Craig Brook NFH, the Maine Fishery Resources Office, the State of Maine, various non-government agency partners, and hatchery volunteers.

Housing is provided on station in a 3 bedroom/2 bath modular house.

Our facility is located 8 miles from the nearest grocery store, and rides from other employees may not be available. Having access to a personal vehicle will provide interns with independence and opportunities to explore Maine.

Housing is provided on station in a 3 bedroom/2 bath modular house. Interns may be expected to share housing with individuals of the same gender or individuals of the opposite gender. Interns will not be expected to share a bedroom with another individual. The house includes a kitchen, living room and dining area. There is a shared washer and dryer located in the house near an entrance that will be available for the occupant as well as volunteers living on station. Bedrooms have one single bed and dresser as well as spacious closets. Interns will need to provide their own linens such as bedding and towels. The kitchen is equipped with a full size refrigerator/freezer, oven with cooktop, dishwasher, table and chairs, as well as a limited amount of cookware and eating utensils. The living room is modestly furnished with a couch, end tables, and coffee table. Wi-Fi is included in the accommodations and there is good cell reception at the house site.
