The Opportunity 

As a Senior Engineer working on Flock's Consumer App API. With the Flock Safety iOS app currently being used by thousands of users daily, we need a Senior Software engineer that can support, maintain, and improve our product as our user base continues to grow. This opportunity is perfect for a talented cloud developer who has consumer empathy and wants to work on a project that will directly impact Flock’s growth metrics and ultimate success.

The Skillset 

  • Experience in back-end development with an emphasis on cloud development and distributed systems - we leverage AWS

  • Implemented and managed asynchronous messaging systems for event-driven architectures (SQS/SNS, EventBridge, etc)

  • Knowledgeable with SQL databases (PostgreSQL)

  • Able to improve scalability and performance as we continue to grow

  • Comfortable working with C-style languages and frameworks like Typescript and NodeJS

  • Familiarity with integrating 3rd-party APIs

  • Prior work with Mobile development or Golang is a plus

90 Days at Flock

We are a results-oriented culture and believe job descriptions are a thing of the past. We prescribe to 90 day plans and believe that good days, lead to good weeks, which lead to good months. This serves as a preview of the 90 day plan you will receive if you were to be hired in this role at Flock Safety.

The First 30 Days

  • Day 1 Impact: You will be busy onboarding today but we always like to have each employee have a “first day push of code.” It doesn’t have to be perfect and it doesn’t have to be huge, just important to start and finish something quickly.

  • Walkthrough of Flock Safety app backend 

  • Walkthrough of Flock Safety iOS app 

  • Walkthrough of Flock Safety Android app 

  • Complete six tickets in the first 30 days

  • Review PR practices

  • Begin working on CJIS certification

The First 60 Days 

  • Ability to perform role with decreased need for guidance;

    • Take ownership of tasks

    • Come up with options of solutions instead of “what should I do?”

  • Able to complete medium sized tasks with little support;

    • Contribute work in small shippable chunks

  • High level understanding of the features we are working on

  • Write up at least one ticket

  • Understand the software design philosophies being used

  • Be comfortable navigating through the code base

  • Engaged during technical conversations to increase quality of input

  • Start monitoring of logs and dashboards

90 Days & Beyond 

  • Acceleration in ramp up time when working on a new ticket

  • Ability to perform role with little guidance with transparency;

  • Be comfortable picking up engineering tasks of larger size and more ambiguity;

  • Communicating across multiple teams to solve problems efficiently;

  • Contribute ideas in Design Reviews and Refinements, for how we build better software

  • Starting to lead in PR reviews

  • Participate in software engineering demo day by presenting a topic that you worked on in the last few months.

The Interview Process 

We want our interview process to be a true reflection of our culture: transparent and collaborative. Throughout the interview process, your recruiter will guide you through the next steps and ensure you feel prepared every step of the way. 

  1. Our First Chat: During this first conversation, you’ll meet with a recruiter to chat through your background, what you could bring to Flock, what you are looking for in your next role, and who we are. 

  2. The Hiring Manager Interview: You will meet with your potential future boss to really dive into the role, the team, expectations, and what success means at Flock. This is your chance to really nerd out with someone in your field. 

  3. The Technical Assessment: Our technical assessments seek to test the hard skills required to do the job. Engineers may find themselves in coding interviews or architecture discussions, sales roles may present mock discovery calls, and leadership roles may craft 90 day plans. Your recruiter will inform you of which assessment you will be assigned and ensure you are fully prepared for your big day. 

  4. The Panel: Learn more about the team, responsibilities, and workflows. You should be prepared to speak about past projects, how you collaborate and communicate with others, and how you live our values. Depending on the team and role you are interviewing for, you may meet with several teammates as well as cross-functional partners. 

  5. The Executive Review: A chance to meet an executive and view Flock from a different lens. Be prepared to ask well-thought-out questions about the company, culture, and more. 

Salary & Equity:

In this role, you’ll receive a starting salary of $171,000-$215,000 as well as stock options. Base salary is determined by job-related experience, education/training, as well as market indicators. Your recruiter will discuss this in-depth with you during our first chat.
