Job Description Summary
Performs skilled technical work in running trials for food companies using equipment in the food processing laboratory. The technician will work closely with a faculty supervisor and will be responsible for maintaining the laboratory and food processing equipment, running industry trials and research projects, maintaining material inventory, and creating and updating SOPs. The position will involve developing experimental protocols and some analytical laboratory work in food science as needed. The ideal candidate will possess excellent technical and communication skills, be highly organized and motivated, and support student assistants.
Responsibilities
Processing Operations
- Work with faculty and students in planning and implementing industry trials and research projects.
- Ensure equipment and laboratory spaces are safe, clean, and in working order.
- Conduct set up, sanitation, processing, and post-process sanitation.
Lab Equipment and Supply Management
- Perform routine maintenance on food processing lab equipment and instrumentation as needed.
- Track the use, storage and location of lab equipment.
- Order supplies, materials, and equipment as needed. D. Assist in assembling, testing, and storing new equipment.
Instructional Support
- Assist graduate students on a variety of lab-related matters.
- Encourage and enforce student compliance with lab policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Agricultural, Chemical, Food, Mechanical Engineering, or Food Science and Technology, or related discipline.
- Working knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and proper storage of food processing equipment.
- Knowledge of the basic principles and practices of beverage pasteurization.
- Demonstrated skills in sanitation, CIP, and COP.
- Ability to keep and maintain basic laboratory records regarding use, maintenance, and storage of laboratory equipment, apparatus, materials, and supplies.
- Demonstrated ability to perform calculations as they pertain to properly and effectively preparing, allocating, and maintaining instructional laboratory supplies and materials.
- Knowledge of and ability to use safe laboratory practices Ability to create and update SOPs
- Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, and electronic mail software
- Technical ability to learn and use enterprise software required for this position.
- Ability to evaluate resource needs and appropriately request/order additional resources as needed
- Ability to innovatively meet required needs with available resources
- Ability to interpret and apply departmental laboratory policies, regulations, and procedures
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
- Ability to work constructively and cooperatively with other staff, department faculty, and college administrators.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in running a Microthermics UHT/HTST unit.

Pay: $23.00 - $30.00 per hour
