Job Summary:
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Food Service Assistant - Casual for the Summer (preferably through Labor Day). Reporting to the Manager of Distribution and Services, The Food Services Assistant will assist in the preparation of breakfast, lunch, salads, snacks to be served at the WHOI Buttery for Institution employees, students, guests, and other visitors. This position is also responsible for promoting a comfortable and clean atmosphere to enable WHOI personnel and guests to eat, relax, and converse. This is a temporary, casual, non-exempt position, and is eligible for casual benefits. The schedule for this position during the Summer is Monday - Friday from approximately 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM, with the potential for additional hours.
The internal working title for this position will be Distribution Assistant.
Essential Functions:
- Insure adherence to all BOH protocols and regulations.

Prepare fruits or vegetables needed for the day.

Prepare salad, snack boxes, and any other grab-and-go items needed for the day.

Make sandwiches that will be needed for the day.

Handle Point-Of-Sale process.

Ensure Soft drink fridge and other grab-and-go displays are restocked daily.

Assists Chef and Food Services Assistant-Lead as needed.

Cover all responsibilities of the Food Services Assistant-Lead in his/her absence.

Responsible for meeting cleanliness requirements including, but not limited to equipment, dishes, utensils, countertops, and tables.

Coordinate pickup times for conference foods with Meeting Service Coordinator and Distribution Assistants.

Perform other such duties as the Supervisor may deem necessary, including functions in other areas of Distribution/Services.

Substitutes for Lead on an as needed basis.
Education & Experience:
High School Graduate or GED preferred. One-year previous food service preferred.
Special Requirements:
Physical Requirements:
Physical requirements include lifting to 30 lbs. and carrying 10 to 25 lbs. 10 times per day. Physical requirements also include frequent prolonged standing and walking, repetitive motion, kneeling, bending, stooping, twisting, climbing ladders/stools, use of hands for basic grasping/manipulation, use of hands for fine manipulation, and reaching above and below the shoulders. Occupational requirements include hearing, talking, understanding verbal instructions and safety warnings, working around others, working with others, and working alone. Must have manual dexterity to be able to work a cash register and use common kitchen tools (knives, slicer, etc.). Ability to read, write and speak English. All are welcome to apply!
